well there was the time i lost my job a few weeks after paying a couple of thousand off my balance. I rang them to ask if I could have a payment holiday (seeing as how I had just made the equivalent of 12 months payments) while I sorted out a new job. Their response was to send me a threatening letter stating the despite previous correspondence my account still remained 0.00 in arrears and if I didnt send them back my card they were going to send the boys in. If I brought my account back up to date I could have my card back.

(some gratitude for paying off thousands eh!!!)

insensed at this utter lack of common sense I rang them and asked if they wanted to be done for liable seeing as how the account wasnt in arrears, to be told by some obnoxious oik that the letter was perfectly correct I was 0.00 in arrears and they did want my card back.

I pointed out that if it was correct my account was "back" up to date so I could have the card back, at which point he admitted that they just wanted the card back, and this was the easiest letter to send me and it wasnt liabless. So I asked for copies of the "previous correspondence". At which point he went very quiet. and 2 days later I got a letter explaining that because I had no income they wanted my card back. It seems my phone conversation had made them realise they needed a letter to cover my circumstances, so here it was and could I please send the card back.

(really good customer loyalty for paying thousands off your balance !!!!)

so personally i wouldnt touch them with a barge pole disinfected at both ends. despite the fact their sales team wanted to give me a free hat at twickenham if i signed up for one of their cards.

I have MBNA American Express....I can't complain. The company rewards generously and works with us with things aren't going so well.

i have had an MBNA platinum card for 10 years...I only use them when they offer the low rate or 0% promotions...otherwise their rates are generally high and variable...which is not good...but I would keep them to use them when they have good promotions...and ALWAYS pay them on time because they have CRAZY rates if you miss only one month!

Big Credit Card operator in the UK, but it is an American Bank. They have been criticised in the USA for unfair practices towards consumers (excessive interest rates, punitive charges, etc).
