I thought I heard this somewhere, but maybe the person just made it up. If it is true, who funds this trip? What goes on there? I am just curious! Thanks!

Yes it is true. Some Jewish Day School offer a field trip to Israel. Then there is Birthright, which send Jews from the ages 18-28 to Israel. Then there are some Yeshivas programs that would provide you with free room and board to study Torah in Israel and some will even sponsor your ticket. When you get to age of 18 you can make aliyah (immigrate to Israel) the Israeli government would give you a free one way ticket to Israel, an allowance of around $5000 (depending on how many people come with you), discounts on many things in Israel), and would send you to Ulpan for few months to study Hebrew on the government pay check.
If you are a Jew check these websites out:

This is a little-known fact: after age 47, all people of Jewish descent get a free trip to Jerusalem. Paid for, of course, by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

But it doesn't stop there. Anyone of any heritage whatsoever gets a free trip to the country of one's ancestry after age 47. If you are Irish, at age 47 you get flown to Dublin for an all-expenses paid vacation. If your grandparents are from Greece: you guessed it! Athens ahoy!

It gets sticky, though, when you are of mixed heritage. If you are 50% Irish and 50% Iowan, for instance, the Daughters of the American Revolution calculate the distance to Ireland and divide it by the distance to Iowa. In that case you would be flown 5/8 of the way to Dublin and then dropped into the sea.
