Why is it accepted in society to take perscribed medication for years to be "normal" but if somebody likes to smoke pot daily to help them relax at the end of their work day society frowns on them. A lot of times people are percribed a variety of drugs to be "stable." But god forbid if someone is a pot head.

Anyone who said it's illegal should be a detective. Because stating the obvious is completly underrated.

It's not accepted in society to take prescribed medication to be "normal." There is a lot of stigma associated with people who take medication for psychological conditions. So there are plenty of people who frown upon someone who takes medication on a daily basis for psychological reasons.

That having been said, there are some people who draw the line between what is legal and what is illegal, and yet others who believe the distinction between "ok" and "not ok" should be whether or not a doctor prescribes it.

Also, there is a big difference between taking something to "be stable" or "normal," such as someone who needs to take Lithium or antidepressants, and taking something to relax at the end of the day.

There are also people who believe that there are better solutions to being tense after work than the chemically-induced state of mind.

It's a good question and has a variety of answers. I think a big part of the reluctance of the government to legalize it is because they couldn't control its production the way they can other medications since anyone could grow it on their own. Also, most people prefer to smoke it, and nowadays anything that is smoked is considered bad by nature. As far as society goes, I don't know that it is frowned on so much anymore, particularly by the younger generations; however, it makes sense that it would be frowned upon by mainstream society since it is still an illegal substance.

Many people may say that it is due to marijuana's side effects or long-term effects, but that doesn't make a great deal of sense because many of the prescription drugs we take cause far worse side effects and health consequences.

Having said all that, I don't smoke pot or even drink alcohol, so I don't know that I am the most expert source to respond to your question! :)

I'm in the same boat. I'm off the weed for a slightly different reason. If I do not remove the meds I use to self medicate, they will not take me serious enough for me to get the therapy I think I need.

I've removed the addictive end of things when i went to rehab. I escalated over 16 yrs to a crack habit. Big may day, time to change the behaviour.

My biggest problem was when the meds I was using, was preventing me from functioning on any other level. So I removed what I thought was the cause of the probs. Now I realize there are other underlying issues. Most people have come to use the weed as habit...not just recreation. I have no problem with people smoking a joint after work or having a beer. I just understand that NEEDING the joint after work is bad.

Either way I'm stuck taking a chemical into my body to compensate for the feelings I have in my head. I don't like having to rely on anything in this fashion.

from what I've learned, pot is only illegal because back in the day, some bigwig who made his money from timber, paid off some legislatures to make hemp and all marijuana bi-products illegal so there would not be competition....no one bothers to question this for some reason.
Any dependence on medicine should be evaluated, if you take pills for cholesterol: are you also eating better and exercising?
If you take heart medication: have you made lifestyle changes to decrease your risk of heart disease?
If you take psychiatric medication: are you also involved in some form of therapy?
THC has many health benefits.....but dependance on ANYthing should be monitored. What about people who drink to relax, take heroin to relax, smoke crack to stay awake (etc.) if you have to justify, there's probably something else going on (I'm all for legalizing by the way...I'm just bringing up different points of view.)
Generally speaking: if it hasnt been widely socially acceptable for at least 100 years, not everyone is gonna jump on the bandwagon.
(Have you seen the film Children of Men? There's a moment where the characters are discussing a suicide drug issued to every home by the government, and one man says something to the effect "assisted suicide in every home, but pot is still illegal."

I got rid of all my medications for my back - the meds gave me an ulcer at the age of 12. I smoke daily and feel that best I have in years. I don't get super-stoned, but enough to relax the muscles. Why is it okay to give a kid narcotics, but an herbal remedy is out of the question? I'm with you. And yes, I'm well aware that smoking pot is worse than smoking cigs, it's still not as bad as taking 2 Vicoden.

first off pot isnt a perscriptions and it doesnt help someone be normal it makes them think they can do anything.. All things that go into your body have an effect the medicines perscribed have a positive effect where pot does not pot only eats your brains cells and cause you to act stupid. this is my thought on it and i hope it helps you... also if it is so important to have something to relax you find a doc to perscribe you something or get a less stressful job

Or consider the effects of alcohol or any other drug that is legal. As I understand it, the problem with making marijuana legal is the inability to effectively tax it due to the contrasting kinds and their varied effects on the individual. This could probably be solved if the proper amount of research was put into it, but it's also too taboo for people to accept. It's not so much what the drug does but the damage the name association does.

The gold standard for marijuana testing is a test that determines when the individual most recently smoked. As it stands, tests can determine if you smoked a month ago but not if you smoked an hour ago. The results are the same. This becomes critical when in a court of law the individual is charged with smoking and driving.

Well, it is hard to talk about this because the reason cigarrettes are legal is simply because they can keep people from making them themselves and make a profit from companies. Weed you can grow just about anywhere so it would be hard to make a profit if it was legal!!

I know is hard to tell people you smoke weed but if you talk to people about weed not as a user but just about the subject, you will find out that more people do it than you thought!!

I have friends in the police who do it and people on professional jobs as well!! Some are considered great people and no body would ever think they smoke but they do!!

You know the people who believe using drugs prescribed by doctors who may cause damage to other parts of the body and think weed is bad because the govt has it as illigal should try it and then tell me that is really bad!!

How many people who use weed do you see killing themselves when deppressed?

I see and hear more cases if any of people in prozac killing themselves since if you read in warnings they cause you to have suicidal thoughts.........how come it is legal to prescribe to people.

You rather them have a risk of killing themselves than to smoke some weed and live happy??

It is all about legalities and $$$$ if it had nothing to do with that The President would tell you how good it is.....because I don't care what anyone tells me I think all presidents to this day have or do use weed to keep on going.......I mean, do you know how busy their freaking schedules are.......who in hell could put up with it without a hit?!?!
