In distance, raptors can see their prey from about 1 mile. This is because their eyes are adapted to see in front and on the side by having two fovea. This is a part of the pupil that concentrates light and has the most receptors. In hawks, there are two, humans have only one. All birds have exceptional vision; raptors (which includes hawks) can see about 8 times better then humans.

A Red Tailed Hawk can see a rat from 2 miles away. Their vision works like a telescope. Most hawks can tunnel their vision so that they can focus on an object that is further away.
