Where the retired people live in Thailand? How much money would be enough for one month living expenses? I would get $1000.00 US a month. I'd like to live in a quiet nice place by the sea.

WoW! Good for you! Thailand is such a nice place to go.
I think that would be enough but it really depends on how you budget & spend it.
Enjoy & Good luck. (- -,)

I agree with Norbyduz. You may want to reconsider. The other day in the Bangkok Post online version, they reported that there is up to 10,000 active muslim rebels in or around Thailand. Now the violence has been limited to the 3 southern provinces and the current government has been working with the leaders but, the violence is continuing. Which means those leaders don't have full control or it is part of Al Qaeda. The violence so far has not spread north. The only violence so far has been blamed on the former supporters for the former prime minister. That was the 9 bombings on 12/31/06 evening. And there was some fires at some schools north of bangkok.

To answer your question, many live in Bangkok, many live in Pattaya or Jomtien about 90 miles south along the ocean. The best source for info there is www.a2zpattaya.com

You can look about 45 minutes further south to Rayong which is also on the ocean. It directly faces south.

You should be able to find a nice clean apartment from $200-500 per month. Just make sure what is included in the rent and what is not. I would try some places for a month at a time and see how the neighbors are and how thick the walls are. LOL

Again, you might want to postpone retiriing to Thailand this year if you can. Things are changing in Thailand right now. And it could get a little bloody.

Good luck

Retired folks live all over the country. However, having said that you need a minimum of 65,000 baht or $1900 USD per month at the current 35 - 1 exchange rate to qualify for a retirement visa. OR you need 800,000 baht in a Thai bank for at least three months prior to applying for that visa. Quiet places by the sea are still able to be had but you won't be able to live to comfotably on only $1000USD per month...I hate to burst your bubble but would rather tell you the true facts up front than let you move her and get disappointed and end up moving back home or getting depressed and doing like many foreigners here and taking a short walk from the roof of a tall building. If you want all the true facts, send me a message.

I've lived in Thailand when I was little and be prepared for super hotness right there. It can get up to 97 degress or up and also the place you want to go in Thailand affects how much you pay, just like in the U.S. I think when I lived there$33 Baht (Thai $$) = 1 US $. I live in the US now though, I say it's a good place for vacation especially phuket . I guess it's ok if you're retired to live there but if you have family I don't reccomend it. The only reason why we had to move there from U.S. was my dad's job but we're back in U.S.

i do not know the exact amount of money (im only 13!!!) but one month? in thailand? you have enough money. thai stuff is cheap, but you also have to look at the hotels and everything else...
i can recommend some beach places
PHUKET
cha-am : id say this and hua hin would be most ideal for a retired person
krabi
trang
hua-hin
pattaya (not quiet though!)
find a nice cheap hotel (but too cheap, is bad quality, ive had unpleasant experience)

avoid the 4 southern provinces. don't worry, no bombs will reach the places i have stated above...however, do be careful!
stay away from very crowded places. please do! lol..
thai people (most) are nice and respectful, they should be no problem! (don't mind 'farang', they meanno harm) but yes, beware of the heat, ESPECALLY IN APRIL WHEN THERE IS THE SONGKRAN FESTIVAL (if you don't know what it is, its where people chuck water at each other, can get pretty out of hand) and in april, the heat is dangerous for foreigners. around 38 degrees CENTIGRADE!
but enjoy your stay, i hope that helped you :)
nowhere else is like thailand!

I would recommend first you visit here look around before you make up your mind. the amount of money you have will be enough for a simple life here. Bangkok is much more expensive and so are areas near the ocean then areas outside the capital, and you will find foriegners living in almost every part of the country. However language and culture could be a big problem if you haven't been here before plus your income would not met the requirement for a visa unless you have savings of 800,000 in the bank that you can transfer here. Good luck

With your budget, it's more than enough to spend in Thailand. Anyway it's depends on your life style. but if consider, moderate life , not too luxury style, it will be enough and you can also saving into the bank account as well.

I would suggest to stay at Hue-hin, cha-um, Petch buri. I think this place is good, not so far from central city (Bangkok-Metropolitan) near the sea, people is kind.

I think staying any place, even natural is good, comfortable place but don't have friends or relatives is not to be good as it should be. So, i think it's more better if you have some friends in Thailand. ^_^

I love Thailand and have lived there for a year and a half! I just got back to the States recently. Be advised, there are ongoing problems with the Govt. and insurrgency down South. Before, it was a carefree place. It seems to be a little uncertain now. I hate to crash your party!

There is supposed to be an election in October which may settle some of the problems.

I would refer to: http://www.bangkokpost.com for current updates and Info.

You may want to consider an alternative country for the time being at least.

Good Luck and enjoy your retirement!

Do as many foreigners living in Thailand.
Go for Vietnam. To Nha Trang or Phan Thiet beach, or Ho Chi Min City. Many foreigners living here already. And you don't have to show any money in your bank here. Just make 3 or 6 month visa run year after year. You can live here easily for around 250$ a month, everything payed.

I would recommend you check out Hua Hin/Cha-Am....They are much quieter than Pattaya/Jomtien..and probably a little less expensive...$1000.00(35,000 baht ) would be enough to have a comfortable life there....nowherema is correct about having 800,000 baht for a retirement visa..You must apply for it in your home country...
If you go learn the thai language..It is hard but will make it a lot easier for you there...
Chok Dee (good luck)
