It really depends. What you should do is focus on what you want from your career. Pick a style and an image for yourself now. Do you want to sing pop or rock or country or reggae, etc.? No one can make that decision but you. Trust me you want to have a plan for your career. This is an extremely competitive industry.

Most good A&R execs will be looking for a complete package. They don't want you to be a diamond in the rough. They want an artist that is already polished. How do you do this? Experience.

Learn to play an instrument. Sing where you can. Compete in contest if that's what it takes to get your name out there.

And also think about your development not only as an artist, but as a person.

College is good idea. There are several great music industry programs across the country.

You have to ask yourself if this is something you really want. Because it's not an easy undertaking to make a living in the music industry. But it is possible.

You will probably hear "no" many more times than you will hear "yes". So be prepared for rejection.

DO NOT send your tapes/CD's/demos etc. to labels, producers, agents, songwriters, etc. WITHOUT making sure they are expecting it. People nowadays will not take unsolicited mail. It is waste of your time to send out a mass amount of tapes. And when you do send a demo, spend a little extra money to have it mixed and mastered. And have it done right, not by your friend that has PROTools on his laptop.

A good place to start is performing as much as your can and building a fan base. Start an artist Myspace page and actually update it. It's free.

You can also put up an EPK (Electronic Press Kit). Check out SonicBids.com. and when you are ready, think about online distribution. (CDBaby.com, musicfreedom.com, etc.) This will cost money.

If you don't write your own songs, try to. Singer-songwriters make more money than artists that don't write.

If you do, then start registering your songs with the national Copyright Office. Research copyrighting your songs. It's very important to do that. And when you are ready register with a PRO (Performing Rights Organization). ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC are the three in the US. Do your research on those.

You need a good manager. But finding a good manager will happen gradually.

Do NOT believe any person who claims to want to be your manager or agent if they require you to put money upfront. IT'S A SCAM.

And NEVER, NEVER sign a contact without having an entertainment attorney look at it first. And not the company's attorney, who is offering the deal, get your own lawyer to look at the contract. Because if you allow yourself to get screwed, you will be screwed by the industry. And having a bad deal really sucks!

Hope this helps.

If you really want to get discovered, you should google "Singing Agents" because if your as good as you say, they will work for you and get you gigs and stuff. They will eventually want 10% but not until you get paid. Also, you could sing at places and stuff, kind of get your name out. You could also sing for American Idol, except for the fact that you have to be 18 (or 16 i think) and older.Good luck!

i'm going to purchase that for a greenback! You do see bands traveling greater and looking out styles of earnings. This in turn is a astounding interest. notwithstanding, the ambience is thrown in there face immediately. i like to purchase on the events. in any different case: I grab a pay attention for loose the place that's loose. in spite of everything: loose is loose!
