Interesting question. I have been going to a top salon in my local city for some years, but got fed up with the high prices.
I have now found one in a small village nearby. OK, the salon isn't so glamorous, modern and glossy, but the service I receive is second to none and much more friendly and the cut, colour etc., I have received is fantastic and only HALF the price of the top salon! Furthermore, I can park outside the door for free!
No contest as far as I am concerned.
Altogether a much more relaxing and stress free experience. It's a pleasure to go there compared with the other place.

They will have a lovely reception area where you can relax. Have all latest tech. Smoothie makers etc. plush chairs. Tea/coffee but at the end your hair is no different to any other fully qualified stylist. The top salons usually train in house to their own standards but all hairdressers should have their NVQ level 2 , 3. I have seen some hair cuts come out of top salons looking terrible but because people pay ott prices they kid themselves into believing it better standard. Its not so dont bother

Well, it depends on what you are getting done. If you are getting a hair cut, anywhere will do. But a lot of places or indepentant hair stylists based in top salons, specialize in hair coloring and highlights/lowlights. Also, I have found that if you try to dye your hair yourself you can end up messing it up. Then, you need to go to a salon to get it fixed anyway. So you end up spending extra money.

Like I said depending on what you want done is the key. A lot of salons are not TOO expensive. Usually its about $65 to get my hair cut and highlighted. Another tip is, if you are going to go to a salon, try different ones, until you find the stylist that you really like. It's worth going back to someone you trust and sometimes they might cut you a deal!

...hope that helped.

Most hair salons can do the same thing. You are paying for the name of the shop. Those employees go to beauty school the same as the other shops. I go to fantastic sams and have never been disappointed. I've gone to expensive ones too and been disappointed both in the final result and the price.

I have paid 5 bucks (with coupon!) and 100 bucks for haircuts and about everywhere in between. In general with haircuts, as with everything else, you get what you pay for. Top hair salons take pride in repeat clientele and their stylists usually look at themselves as artists. But some places are really just a rip off. Here are some tips on getting the best cut for the most reasonable price.
#1 Places like cost cutters, etc. generally teach their stylists 5-10 common haircuts and are interested in getting lots of people in and out of the seats. If you're looking for just a blunt trim on straight hair then this is the place for you. Try going to one in an affluent neighborhood and asking the person at the desk who's most popular.
#2 Mid level price range places, especially in neighborhoods/suburbs make their living on a few repeat customers and are happy with that. Usually it's a lady who's been cutting hair for years and all of her clients are her friends and knows exactly what they want. Be careful of these places because your chances of coming out with what SHE wants you to look like are highest in these places.
#3 High end places have a reputation and like to keep it up. The pros are: most stylists are interviewed extensively and even have trial periods, products are usually better, and they don't have that turn and burn mentality. Usually what you're paying for is real estate and the stylist's reputation. Don't go to the "first chair" usually the owner or featured stylist, unless it's for color. They are the most expensive and not always the best. Try and get in on one of the junior stylists or someone who's relatively new.
#4 ASK AROUND. word of mouth is the best way to find out who's good in your area.
#5 Bring Pics. Whenever I am getting a new style or going to a new salon I bring my laptop with a slide show of pictures of the style I want. I promise if you just use words to explain you'll end up with something you don't want.

no they have a big name so that just gives them that much more reason to charge a higher price. think about it this way...a hair stylist has to go to a beauty/cosmotology school and chances are they are all taught about the same stuff...so what makes one that much better than the other?! nothing...i go to a small hair salon in the town where i live and i wouldnt go anywhere else for nothing because the person that does my hair has done it enough that she knows me and what i like...that way i know i wont come out looking all messed up or anything. its great!

That would really depend ..My best piece of advice is to ask someone who really has great hair color/cut..even if you just see them grocery shopping or wherever (if you don't personally know someone) ask the.."you have great hair..can I ask where you go..and more specificWHO they see there"..most girls would be flattered by the compliment and are more than willing to share their secrets..
Even at the high end salons they have 'trainees' and you can't be sure who you are getting..I asked someone this question 10 years ago and have followed my stylist all over ..she now runs her own salon..wouldn't go anywhere else!!

No!!! You are paying too much for something that you can go somewhere else and get the same if not better, cheaper. I don't brag but I am D@mn good at doing hair, and I only charge $12.00 for a haircut, no matter if you get it shaved or how its cut. Always by referrals if possible.

its not the salon its the master, but usually they r at the top. i went to a guy who i blow dried my hair for a long time and i really liked him, but when i went for a cut and colour change he just ruin my hair! i went to a pro and he cut my hair shorter than i wanted but it really was necessary and returned my colour and made it really nice. he also grew my hair back in only 3 months. he convinced me cutting it every month just a little to stimulate the growth so im really happy him. i think pro is good for a new style or a big change but normal blowdry is ok anywhere as long as the products are good and u explain exactly how u want it

I went to a top salon and paid £160 for a colour. They buggered it up, it went a horrible straw colour, not the nice creamy blonde that i wanted and have previously had. I had to wait 5 days for another appointment for them to correct the colour. I spent 5 days in hat! Never again.
