i don't know if it's really bad to read about magic when you're catholic and have a religious family?

I would say let the Holy Spirit guide you, for The Spirit instills: WISDOM

UNDERSTANDING

KNOWLEDGE

COUNSEL

FORTITUDE

PIETY

FEAR OF THE LORD

If you are doing a report on it, or just curious, I would say refrain from the curious, because it may be tempting to read more, and magic and the occult usually have curses on their books.

Stick with God and all things will be good.

I don't know anything about the catholic religion, but I would say if you are reading fiction material, or reading just for the enjoyment of it, then no. I love Harry Potter and I am a Christian. I do not practice or believe in magic. I think that some people just go overboard. IF it was wrong then most small children would be sinners, since almost every child at some point imagines they have magical powers.

It depends.

Are you reading a Harry Potter book or trying to learn to cast spells?

Catholic Church teaches:

All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion.

These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons.

Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

With love in Christ.

I am Catholic and I love Harry Potter. I also like to watch the great magicians on TV. Loving God and believing in His way of life does not make things you read bad. Only if you conduct your life by doing bad things with the knowledge you gain from reading about magic.

Ask yourself this. Are you really catholic? Do you believe everything you're being told to abide by in the catholic faith? If you look for answers in your inner self instead of in others, does your religion feel right to you? Does reading about magic feel right to you? Or maybe, does reading about magic make you most happy? Look INSIDE. Your religion may be right for you, and it may not, but don't look outside yourself for the answer.

Magic is a form of divination and, thus, is a violation of the First Commandment. Merely reading about it may not be a bad thing - unless you believe and/or practice magic.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says it best, I think:

Divination and magic

2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future.48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

What are you reading? If you are just reading "about' it but not interested in practicing it, I'd say it's okay. You don't want to be drawn into that side of the supernatural though. It's dangerous.

It's better to stay away from such things if you feel you are tempted...

The holy books of the Abrahamicists- Christians, Muslims and Jews- only prohibit *some* kind of magics.

As long as you are not doing those kinds, there should be no problem.

People who say otherwise generally have not actually read said bibles.

It's not bad to read about magic and be entertained, but it is bad to believe in magic.
