I take my dogs on walks daily. He doesnt seem to be in any pain but occasionally he will stop walking and start kicking up dirt with his rear legs. Anyone know why?

This is how males mark their scent. Usually, they will do it after they pee, but some will do it in certain spots where smells are stronger. Just don't stand behind him, you'll get a face full of dirt!

Dogs have scent glands in their paws. When they come across a place they think needs to be marked for teritory they will scratch at the ground with their feet. Also if they just urinated there it is to spread the urine to spread the scent. It's a very normal thing for dogs to do and can be discouraged if you don't like this behavior in your pet.

It depends when they do it. The other people have good answers but the only one I didn't see is neurological damage. I knew a shepherd that did it but it was a result of an infection he had as puppy that caused encephalitis.

If this isn't constant then I would say it isn't neurological though.

Spray the leash with sour apple flavor. You use that to repell the dog from biting objects around the house. The dog will avoid biting the leash.

Don't know for sure but my dog does it when she's finished going potty, when she is in trouble and told to lay down or in general if she gets ticked off. I think she is trying to make a statement of some sort but I don't speak dog! Her pup does the same thing!
