Find a shop that sells both (or go to two shops if necessary) and ask the sales folks if you can take a picture with each lens.Look at the images and see what you think....
The Nikon folks design lenses to be durable(abused by newspaper people) and the Tokina engineers aim for the amatuer market(don't drop it). If the choice is ever whether to buy one Nikon lens or two Tokina lenses get the two Tokinas!

The Nikon is better, but the Tokina has pretty good reviews. It sort of depends on what you intend to do with your photos, and if your photography expertise will exceed the capacity of the Tokina lens. The Tokina may be all you need

That will probably depend on what you plan on doing with your photos. If 9/10ths is good enough (probably is for the vast majority of photos) then the Tokina will probably do fine.

I took a photo course last fall and the instructor had several third party lenses. He was a D2X shooter and could afford most any lenses he wanted and said some of the third party stuff is fine.

I have no experience with this one... but i know that www.kenrockwell.com does. like all questions of that nature, only you know your personal sacrifice for price.
