It is because too many Brits are spoilt and greedy. There are actually people in this society who have the latest computer technology and TV DVD equipment and still consider themselves poor. Maybe if more people read about the history of this country instead of the alarmist nonsense in the tabloids they would realise how LUCKY they are.

1) Where are you getting your facts? Gordon Brown?!!

2) Just because it is low relevant to Europe isn't saying much - that would be like saying Zambia is well off compared to Zimbabwe. It is a true statement but they are both very poor.

3) You do not appear to be looking at overall taxation - as a % of GDP it is higher now than even the 1970's, it is just spread out and hidden in such ways as to make it look better.

4) The UK government takes approx 43% of the country's GDP to spend - that is high by any standard.

5) UK Corporation tax is still 30% - compare this to Republic of Ireland where many US multinationals are relocating head offices (much to annoyance of US govt!) Low Corp Tax encourages job creation and the RoI govt gains overall because their income tax rate is higher.

6) And don't forget the £5 billion (£5,000 million) pounds a year taken from pension savings by the UK govt which has been a large contributor to the current pensions crisis.

Direct taxation, i.e. income tax etc. are amongst the lowest.

HOWEVER

We pay a very high rate in VAT, we have stamp duty on houses, inheritance tax hits people harder and harder, we have probably the highest tax on fuel anywhere in Europe.

You ought to look at the overall tax burden, and you will see that we are far from being amongst the lowest in Europe...

It's not paying the tax. I'm quite happy to pay my dues.
It's what the current muppets in control are doing with my hard earned, that gets up my bugle!

because a lot of it seems to be getting wasted. i don't have a problem with paying tax, but when you read about the millions it's costing to stay in iraq it makes me question why i pay it.

Because people are stupid! They resent paying any tax and expect to get everything for free.
