Ok so I am 20 years old and I want to become a police officer here the bay area of california. I am a little worried that some things in my life will prevent me from being a police officer. Its mostly just from my first work at a grocery store where. I worked there when I was 18 and I remember I ended up taking a mini stapler, and maybe a soda or two. I meant to pay for those items but didnt end up doing it. I dont really know whether its because i forgot or what but will this prevent me from becoming a police officer in a big city out here??

Just be honest. That biggest thing is people think they can beat the system. Cops are trained to detect deception, they do thorough backgrounds, drug tests and polygraphs (which are very reliable), if you lie, they will catch it. If you are honest, they will respect it.

Seriously, you are worried about stolen stapler and soda? They won't care about that, HOWEVER, they will fire you (refuse to hire you) if you lie about it.

At the end of the day, your INTEGRITY is all you have; don't give it up for anything!

Congrats on your choice to join this field. One thing I might caution you: you are 20 years old. 21 is the age you need to be in order to be sworn. Some panels might view you being 20 as a sign of limited life experience. Do you live at home? Do you have a job? Are you responsible with your finances (good credit?)? Ask yourself these questions. Those situations you described are pretty petty on the grand scheme of things (surely we all have left the office/store with pens, etc.). The key is to be honest, not only with the panel and other application stages, but with yourself. KNOW why you want to be a police officer. KNOW the risks, and KNOW what sacrifices you might have to make in your life. Best of luck to you!

Those are small. I think what they are really looking for is honesty. So, if you stole those things, tell them in your application. Because you don't want to omit it and then when they ask you when you are being polygraphed and you lie is a most certain disqualifier. Even if you've smoked pot a couple of times, it's ok as long as you are honest about it. We are all human and make mistakes.
