How old is your dog? Tails are docked within days of birth when the tail is mostly cartilage. If your dog is any older than a couple of weeks old the docking would be considered an amputation and should only be performed by a vet during surgery and only then if there is a physical need for removal.

The vets office. Some will not do it period. It really depends why you are having it done. As if not done early enough, it becomes a surgery. My dog was 9 weeks when her tail was docked and it was surgery.
Unless the tail is going to cause the pet problems, I would just leave it alone.

No decent vet should agree to do it. Tail docking is frowned upon, if not banned by the British Veterinary Association, as it is deemed cruel and unnecessary. Dogs were born with tails for a reason.

If your dog is over a few days old, it is a terribly dangerous surgery. Infection too often goes straight up the spinal chord and dogs die so quickly from it..Remember, it is where your dog sits, and there is no way to keep it pain-free and sterile..I don't know any vet that will do it after the pup is 8 days old, unless there has been a major tail injury..
It is normally done by the breeder's vet at 3-5 days old..

docking tails is not illegal in the uk yet and all the people who thinks its cruel to have tails docked at a couple of days old obviusley havent had a dog with long powerfull tail that has to have it taken off in parts because of the damage done to it and then eventually have ur dog die because of infection so u tell me which is more cruel

The vet used to do it, but quite a lot of Vets will no longer dock tails unless it is a working dog.

Why the heck would anyone want to dock a dogs' tail? If a dog is born with a tail...then it's MEANT to be there. sheesh.
'Tis only the cruel at heart that would hurt a creature so.

You can't it is illegal and banned now in the UK
It is unnecessary and cruel and unless the tail is damaged should not be removed and then only by a qualified vet.
How would u like ur tail cut off....

Get in touch with the Council for Docked Breeds - but you'll have to be quick, the law banning tail docking is effective from April 2007

Is your dog a springer spaniel who works on hill cliffs and gets his/her tail wripped to shreds by the brambles whilst searching for the animals that you have shot dead. If the answer is no, it is not necessary to have your dogs tail removed. If you are wanting somebody to have cosmetic surgery, mess around with your own body and leave your poor dog alone. I'm sure he's/she's perfectly happy with his/her tail.
