If I'm a Christian, is it wrong to have an emo-ish style/appearance? I kinda dress that way, I'm going to get my hair cut in an "emo-ish" fashion, etc. Is that wrong? My parents and pastors and all those peoples are telling me that as a Christian, I should set myself apart in style to have a "godly" appearance. Well, that is kind of hard to do nowadays. Is it wrong to look punk/emo and still be a Christian?

well, you can dye your hair, label yourself and do lots of other things, and still be a christian. But i would have to call into question your heart. where does it belong? Have you truly given yourself up to Jesus, or do you still hold out part of it to stay "cool" with the world. Phillipians 2:14-15 says "14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe"
Here the disciple Paul is calling us to a higher standard, to shine like stars in the universe, and not succumb to the sin of the world.
the world is a like a big shiny toy, and i myself often am tempted by it, but you need to remember who is tempting you. Satan wants to lead you astray, and to fall into sin, because the more you sin, the farther you are from God.
I'm not saying you shouldn't dress cool, or be "punk-emo" in fact i know plenty of strong christians who dress that way. Just don't let that take over other aspects of your life. Hold on to the word of God, and don't let the world distract you.

There's nothing wrong with personal expression. I know many devout Christian kids who dress this way, but their focus is on their heart. As a Christian, you are called to dress modestly and discreetly, but not in a certain style. I would even argue that by dressing in this way, you not only express yourself, but also build a bridge to others who may not see themselves as able to relate to a different style of Christian. On the other hand, if your parents are opposed, you need to be open and honest about why you feel the way you do, and then submit to their authority.

Definitely not!! JC Follower is trying to help but she's way off the mark! It's not about a look, its about a lifestyle of unconditional love. I dress pretty well average joe, but I think in an individualistic, "artsy" way, if you will, and this doesn't sit well with many conservative Christian types. I've found, however, that ever since I've gotten in touch with this side of myself I've found greater peace and closeness to God than ever before in my life.

As a Youth Pastor I tell our students it's not how you dress it's your motivation. Do you want to dress that way just because you think it's a cool look or is it because your parents and/or pastor don't want you to? If you think it's just a cool look that's fine.
On the other hand, the Bible does say to obey your parents. My parents wouldn't allow me to pierce my ears. So I waited until I moved out on my own and was old enough to make the decision for myself out of respect for my parents.

Your "pastors" sound like the Pharisees (read Christ's interactions with them in the NT). There is NOTHING "wrong" with your fashion sense. It's what's in your heart and your thoughts, not whether you are wearing black or whatever. WHat is a "Godly" appearance anyway? Does that mean they want you to wear a shining white robe with a gold belt? Silliness.

Being a Christian is about your beliefs, not your hairstyle. Those who tell you that it is about the hairstyle are focusing on external manifestations of faith in an attempt to cover for internal lack of understanding.
JC Follower (above) may not believe it, but there are triple tongue-pierced Goths who are as good, if not better, Christians than many who wear Eddie Bauer.
It's about who you are, not what you wear.

Jesus blended in in appearance.. he didnt have this "radiant glow" about him or whatever. I dont think it's wrong. The steryotype these people have can however be shot at you for looking like them but as long as you dont live that part out i dont think its wrong! I'm the same way and people shouldnt care. Tell you're parents not to judge people. ;)

I think so long as your not showing all your skin, or getting all sorts of tatoos or peircings, choosing your own style of clothing or hair is just fine (in fact I would encourage it over just following some shallow crowd).

I guess...i can kind of relate. I usually wear dark colored long skirts,black oddly-fitted shirts,my beloved double anarchy pendant, and my lovely biker gloves.
I am criticized for the whole skirt and biker gloves thing....but I like how it looks and that's all that matters.
I don't think that God minds you dressing the way you see fit.

confident. adultery is having lust on your heart. its treating human beings (generally women human beings) like their gadgets. it rather is perplexing at 17. yet God gave you a direction. stay with that direction. Ask for repetenace. Then attempt to make a concious attempt to no longer do it returned.
