Is it dangerous to drive with the gas cap off, that is, the gas pipe is exposed?

I've called state police in the past when I saw someone on the highway with their cap off. Am I overreacting or not? I would think that, for example, someone flicking a cigarette out their window could send an ember into the pipe, etc.

Unfortunately there is no international gesture for "hey, your gas cap is off", as there is for, say, "hey, you're an a**hole for cutting me off."

The probability of a cigarette flying into a gas tank is unlikely. A missing gas cap can throw a code in newer vehicles causing the idiot light to come on.

Yes driving with the gas cap off on a car is extremely dangerous and should never be done. You did not over react at all by calling the police because this is a major fire hazard and along with the danger of cigarette embers getting accidently flicked into the cap or other fire causing substances if someone is traveling in a very fast speed limit zone and gas is leaking out then it can spill on the roadway causing other drivers to lose traction of their car and have a deadly spin out with their car. Good job on making such a good decesion when you were in an instance where this was occuring.

yes your freaking out . stop being such bug and mind your own business. the tank has a flap in it which closes off when the filler nozzle is not in it.
it is safer to not have this cap on overall because if the car was on fire the fire men remove the cap to vent the fumes and allow the tank to stay cooler
the cap is there to keep the fumes in so you don't have your gas evaporate. that's it . except if you have a locked cap that is to keep your gas from being stolen .
you need to sniff some gas or take a chill pill
i bet your one of the ones that complains about grammar and spelling on here too

sounds like you need a new fuel pump. or a fuel filter. the fuel system does not pull hard enough to create a vacuum. your car probably gets good gas mileage meaning that the pull from the tank is not creating enough pressure to have it stall. what your talking about only happens in very high horsepower cars. 1000bhp+. but to answer your question. no it will not hurt to run without one. you may get worse gas mileage or a little water in your tank but thats about it. your check engine may come on, but i thin thats only in newer cars. by the way you can buy vented gas caps.

No, it's not dangerous at all. In fact, I read that Ford is developing a new gas tank nozzle that requires no gas cap at all. Don't believe me? Read the linky below:
