If you stick to the places tourists have heard of, New York is one of the safest cities in America (and on earth, for that matter). You want to use common sense and have some basic street smarts, but unless you're planning to go into drug-ridden residential neighborhoods in Brooklyn or the Bronx, you don't need to worry about getting beaten up.

all the normal rules apply, stay in safe places, dont put urself at risk, dont go looking for trouble.

NYC is safe but you should always keep an eye out for possible problems. Stay out of the north east and north west areas of central park at night. and try and sit in the conductors car in the subways late at night.

Dont give anyone the chance to 'beat you up'.

Times Square.

It's full of obnoxious tourists from the south and mid-west.
