I became unwell about a month ago . I have had pancreatitis due to what is thought to be gallstones/blocked bile duct. I had all the symptoms, jaundice dark urine and clay coloured stools. These seem to have returned to normal but my doctor says I will require my gallbladder to be removed. My liver at first was showing very abnormal results after my ultrasound I was told I had "loads" of gallstones. I was told that I wouldnt need the endoscopic procedure as the bile duct looked clear but this would depend on further blood tests. I have had the results of those today and my liver is not normal and I will have to have the endoscopic procedure next week plus a MRI? scan. I am worried now as to why after being told my bile duct looked clear on the ultrasound what this may mean.

Really doesn't sound like cancer. No single liver function test is available to quantify liver disease. In normal pregnancies, alkaline phosphatase levels may be elevated three- to fourfold, secondary to placental alkaline phosphatase levels. You do know what gallstones are made of right??? Gallstones form when bile in the gallbladder condenses into solid, crystal structures. Gallstones can be made of bilirubin, a bile pigment, cholesterol, or both. That could be a clue to the bile problem...

Have your pancreas been checked out? You may have calcification of your pancreatic duct. Do you drink too much? It seems that you need your pancreas checked out first, I don't understand why you need an MRI scan, a simple Ultrasound scan is all you need, but if the NHS is paying for it ,why not? If you need your gallbladder removed, it's not a big deal, but your pancreas are!
