If you EVER plan on doing any editing with the movies you are going to make, ALWAYS use a miniDV format.

The plain cassette is a dinosaur now. It is getting more difficult to find tapes for them. The miniDVD is a write once format, so if you mess up or finalize the DVD, you need to put in another one.

The miniDV is the best. I have used them since they came out. I do all types of editing with them, and they last forever.

I personally prefer mini dv. My reasons being that I do a lot of editing work and with mini dv cameras (which have both dv in and out) you have the option to return your edited footage back to a dv tape in the camera. This is useful if you want to keep a dv copy of the edited footage or if you want to transfer to vhs etc. Im not certain if this feature is avaliable on dvd cams. Having said that I have heard pros and cons for both formats. I guess I just stick with what I trust!!

This may help you decide

MiniDV cameras are the beasts. They're the easiest to edit, provide the best quality, have the cheapest recording media, and are very rugged and durable. They ARE cassette tapes, so don't get them confused with something else. Get a canon GL2, and you can really call your camera "the beast." Hope this helps!
