He will freak out when you take him to the other house, not when he comes home. I would suggest you leave him at home unless the other person is very patient because they will have the problem. He will relax when he gets home. Just like when you take him to the vet or something. He'll be nervous there. Cats don't like change very much. Just put out extra food & water & he'll be fine.

Change in environment. Just like bringing an outdoor cat inside. They like their own surroundings. I use to go to my friends house to cat sit. I loved it felt like I was on vacation. Let her come to your house next time and see if the cat still acts strange.

Unless your cat is ill, It will be fine staying home alone. The only thing your going to do by moving it to your friends house is stress it out, and when you bring it home your liable to get a lot of really bad attitude for a while.

If your just gone for a day, just leave the cat at home. It isnt going to bother him a bit. It is going to bother him more to put him in a strange place that he doesnt know.

Cats get attached to places more than people. If it is just for one day and night you are better off leaving your cat at home and leaving out heaps of water and more food.
Cats get extremely stressed when taken to new places, your cat will freak out totally!!!!

Give the friends a key to your place and instructions on feeding the cat and checking the litterbox. Then you can leave the cat at your place and not worry.
