i know it may sound harsh or cruel...but should you have the right to know if there is a mentally unstable person living next door or down the street? Since they dont know right from wrong this could be dangerous...i wouldn't want my kid around a person like that and wouldn't it decrease your property value knowing there are metanlly ill people on your street.

Wouldn't you feel more comfortable if you knew which of your neighbors were mental? Also, if you knew before hand...would you still move in next door to one? just wondering...

You don't sound cruel just practical. In fact, most, if not all, of these folks are already under some medical supervision to help them get through their days. Downs syndrome people are usually very childlike and don't live too long past thirty. Retarded people can be impulsive, and may not realize their strength, so caution should be used when there are children around who might provoke them. Supervision of meds is important, but by and large, it seems to be the men who gravitate towards youth groups, (leaders, counselors, clergy) who pose the greatest danger. Get to know your neighbors, and set your mind at ease.

I cannot believe how insensitive and ignorant you are. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting such an offensive question -- or at least embarrassed at what a fool you've just made of yourself. People with Down's syndrome are not necessarily mentally unstable nor are they mentally ill. And actually, not all people with Down's Syndrome are mentally retarded either. My sister-in-law has Down's syndrome and I bet her IQ exceeds yours in triple digits. Why don't you do yourself a favor and conduct some actual scholarly research before posting nonsensical information that casts you as a mentally ill person yourself! And to answer your question -- I know I'm not alone when I say I would rather live next door to a family with a Down's child than a moron like you. I wouldn't want my children anywhere near such a repulsive excuse for a human being.

You are a mean person to think they are mental.
They have diminished capacity to understand..maybe can't read or write but in no way are they mentally ILL!
These sweet people are just like everyone else. They want a home and family and a job. Some can drive a car and almost all are an asset to the community. They are loyal and lovable and you may learn something from them if you were ever around them.
My son is mild mentally handicapped and a fine young man with a job and a truck he has paid for. He longs to meet a nice Christian like himself to marry and hopes to have children one day.
So be more careful when you degrade a whole group of people out of your ignorance.

mental condition after the fact.

Do you know any personally? If you did you would know that downs syndrome people are very sweet and friendly. My nephew has downs syndrome, and yes, he can be stubborn but he's the sweetest boy I've ever met.
And you want to put them on a list like a criminal? Why? They don't deserve that! The difference is those people were born that way and didn't have a choice in the matter. They may be slow, but they do know right from wrong if they're parents taught them...they are capable of learning. Their mind is not totally mush, you know!
Criminals know right from wrong and choose to do wrong. Down syndrome is not chosen, it's like a disease. It is no one's fault.

You are so grossly ignorant to what Down syndrome is that I hardly know where to begin. People with Down syndrome (not "retards or down syndrome people" as you so hatefully call them) are not mentally unstable. They are, to some degree developementally delayed, but they certainly know right from wrong and are no threat to you or your property value.

Quite honestly, I think hatemongers like yourself should have to register. I would feel much safer in a neighborhood of people who are developmentally delayed than I would in a neighborhood where you live. Your ignorance and hatred quite possibly is indicative of some mental instability of your own and how can anyone know what you are capable of in your quest for "perfect neighbors".

And guess what... your kid could probably learn a lot from having a friend with some sort of disability. Perhaps they could learn compassion...or how about learning courage, or the ability to triumph over adversity.

You're far more dangerous than the people you are so afraid of. And the fact that you obviously have made these judgement calls without gaining any actual facts or personal experience with people who have Down syndrome means you probably just go around looking for people to hate.

I feel sorry for you, and even more sorry for any children you may have.

Are you for real? Like others have said.... you need to check your facts. You are talking about two entirely different disabilities. Just because a person has a disability doesn't make them stupid or dangerous - ignorance does. Maybe you should actually spend some time with people who have disabilities you'll find some wonderful, amazing, caring people that you probably aren't worthy of being in the same room with.

First of all, there is a difference between mentally retarded and mentally ill. Mentally retarded people did not ask to be born that way, they are just developmentally slow and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Mentally ill people can do something about their situation. They are not retarded, they are just not in a sane state of mind. They are normal like you and me and can function normally, just a little messed up in the head if you know what I mean.

Get your facts straight before you ask a question of that nature you idiot!!

1) Retard is a term that can lead to discrimination proceedings. Be careful what you say.

2) People with mental illnesses that are dangerous are kept in a secure unit or under mental health care.
A lot of people who are mentally ill or disabled will not be a threat to anyone.

You should do some research on this issue.

You are a ******* dick!

A mentally retarded person is different than a mentally
Disturbed person.

I can't believe you even asked that.

No it wouldn't decrease your property value.

If they were a harm the would live in a group home as most do if they aren't supervised by a parent/guardian etc.
