Is there anything that I can do on the side while working to make some extra cash?

It all depends on what your "experience and/or training" is. It also depends on what you are your main job allows on the side as you don't want to create an ethical issue.
If you have the experience, then you may be able to pick up some inspection/report jobs for small contractors who are required by the building dept. to get an engineer to look at issues that come up when building on a site. You can find a designer who needs a structural analysis once in a while also.

Go back to school and become an accountant or an attorney.
