No. No chicken on Ash Wednesday or on Fridays during Lent.

Well, no.

Ash Wednesday was a few days ago.

Pius XII issued a edit that changed the fasting rules for Lent. It is now eating meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. If you ate chicken the other day, and you did it because you forgot it was Ash Wednesday; don't fret. God understands. However if you did know and you ate the chicken anyhow, it's only a venial sin and certainly not considered mortal.

Today is Friday, so eat no meat. Have eggs, pancakes, fish, enjoy!

No you can not. Only fish and other seafoods.

One belief of why meat was chosen is because most people feel that giving up meat (beef and chicken) is an inconvenience.

The Church asks us to inconvenience ourselves sometimes to serve as a reminder that they should always have God as a top priorty and pleasures as a lesser priorty.
Another belief is that in many poorer countries, beef is a specialty. For us to give it up, helps us to remember about people who are less fortunate than we are.

*CAN* you? sure, especially if it is a dietary requirement for health reasons.

Catholics are encouraged to abstain from meat (aka, flesh, cattle, fowl, pork, etc) on Ash Wednesdays and the Fridays during Lent, but it's not as if you're going to go to hell or something if you don't follow the tradition.

I thought Catholics stopped that tradition, abuot not eating certain foods on certain days. Atleast every Catholic I know don't do it.
