We start with 10 pears in the air (on a tree).
The first man takes one pear from "the air" or off the tree.
The 2nd man takes the same pear from the 1st man.
The 3rd takes the pear from the 2nd.
and so on until the 10th man has taken the pear from the 9th one.
Each man has taken a pear. Nine pears are still hanging there.

Ten pears in the air means ten trees. The tree bearing pears is called pear.
There were 19 pears on the (10) trees.
