Stay away from department and chain stores, all they have is junk. Check out the major maufacturers web sites, Trek, Giant, Specialized, Jamis, they all have dealer locator features on the web site. Figure out what you might like, then go to your local bike shop to get fitted and talk to a knowledgeable sales person.

Get yourself to a few of your local bike shops. Check out what is around. There are so many good manufactures out there. I would do you a disservice to recommend just a few.

There are quite a few steps between mountain and road bike these days Only you know which is right for you.

Your local bike store will fit you to a bike and make sure that it is adjusted properly. (stay away from department store, poor quality and no after sales service)

The type of bike you need depends on the terrain you'll be riding. You may want to consider what's known as a Hybrid, something along the lines of a Trek 7100 http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1312600&f=27
It will give you the best of both worlds, I just purchased one for my daughter of 32 yrs and they cost $429.00 New. Just something to consider.
