My mother told me that if I child (under 12 years old) is deprived of sleep for more than 40 solid hours, without a wink of sleep, that they will die.

It is siad to be scientifically impossible for a child to stay awake all day, night and they next day so medical experts claim.
That is why a child can only need 2 hours extra sleep, but find it extremily difficult to make it awake until dawn.

What the F was that all meant to mean?

It is basically saying that children need to sleep. The human body has a reason for sleeping. It relaxes the body and gives it time to reset for the next day.

You can die from exhaustion or over exertion. Your body could possibly go into shock if it doesn't get sleep.

As a young teenage/child you need approximatly 9 hours of sleep, for some it may be 10.

I know it is possible to stay up for a full 24 hours, but 48 hours may be a bit of an exaggeration.

I don't recommend trying to say up, yea midnight is like ok for some people but sleep is much better than not sleeping. You put yourself at greater risk for injuries and what not when you don't sleep. Your body starts to function irregularly, you loose focus and your attention span is not as long. You can also loose temperary focus as far as your reflexes and reactions are concerned.

Not being in "tip-top" shape could kill you if you get into a bad enough accident, but the whole point is not to stress your body out to that point.

I think your mother was trying to teach you that the proper amount of sleep is necessary for your health. Not only your physical health, but your mental health health. Sleep deprivation can be fatal in small creatures, this means being forced to stay awake for long periods of time. Your body builds up lactic acid, and needs sleep to even out. If you don't get enough sleep, just going to work the next day can be rough...or trying to concentrate in school.. Young people need extra sleep because their brain cells are still developing, and will do so until about age 18 to 20.
When you can accept your mom as a helpful person, I expect your life will be a lot easier for you. Best wishes.

I think your mom wants you to get your proper rest. Children need sleep. Adults need sleep. It is what helps us to stay healthy. On the other hand, if your mom is one who does awaken you after only a couple of hours of sleep at night, then call CPS on her. Take care.
