Ordinary Time is the liturgical season where the church goes about its "ordinary" business. That is, we are not celebrating a high holy time or in a season of specific preparation or rejoicing. It is a time when the bulk of the Gospels are read at mass and the basic teaching of the church is brought to the fore.

One professor of mine said we should call it "EXtrordinary time" as during that time we really flesh out what it means to live a Christian life.

It's the part of the liturgical year when you really aren't in a particular season. Example, after the Easter season, you are in Pentecost 50 days later. All of that time is the season of Easter. However, after Pentecost, you are in ordinary time. It isn't attached to any particular season. There is advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost seasons. The time in between and the time not associated with those seasons is simply ordinary.

It's not Christmas, Easter, Lent, Advent, or any particular season. It's just ordinary time.
