my boyfriend and I have been dating for almost 2 years, and moved in together 6 months ago, and we've always pretty much worked the same shifts, but recently he was accepted for a job change. His work will be about 35 minutes away from our apartment, and he'll be working swing shift, 6pm-2:30am. I work from 8-5! He will be working sunday-thursday, and I work monday-friday! I'm worried that not seeing eachother as much as we usually do will be a huge strain on our relationship, and was wondering who else has gone through this? And any ideas to help stay close? thanks so much for the answers!! :0)

Let me start with saying that it will probably be a strain on your relationship. If you're together, it's because you enjoy spending time with each other and that's going to decrease significantly. Be ready for more fights about nothing and getting upset with each other simply because you want to see them more.

Make every opportunity count, but allow for personal space and decompression time. Be very intentional about the time you spend together (actually doing something you both enjoy, not just sitting in front of the TV). Utilize lunches at work to see one another. Never underestimate surprises (notes, flowers, food), anything that shows you care and you're thinking of the other person.

More than anything, be very open with your communication. Use this as an obstacle you're facing together and it can bring you closer.

heck you are almost talking about my relationship with my fiance.

We started dating in march 2003. 2 1/2 hour drive one way for us. In July 2004 I moved in with him. My job was 4pm-mid most weekdays and every other weekend and his is 8am-4pm M-F.

Aug 2006 we got engaged.

I still have weird hours, and we make the most of it on my days off.
