Engagements last all lengths of time. In our family most have married 6 mo. after engagement.
I too am a lovey dovey person, my husband more quite and reserved. In the beginning, I felt so lonely because he held back all the words and things I knew that he could be saying and doing .It just was not him. We where defiantly opposites. I missed that loving and touching and I continued, I put out a lot, got a little back and that is more then I would have gotten had I not decided to keep putting my love on him. He was military and really into his training so I thought that was it. Not necessarily.Just not his personality and mine was oh so the opposite. I loved and hugged everybody.
Many years have passed and I must say that I am married to the most caring, kind, giving, appreciative, christian man alive.~Jill

In my opinion an engagement should be long, maybe a few years. Because when you're engaged you have set in your mind you're spending your life with this person so you get comfortable and start showing your true colors then you get to see how your partner will be in the marriage. Also, try living with the person. The longer you wait the more you get to know them. If he's not romantic already I doubt it'll get any better (romance wise i mean).

Most people are engaged for about 9months- a year since it takes about that long to plan a wedding.
If your guy is totally clueless about how to be romantic. Be open and tell him exactly what you want from him. Guys aren't good at guessing and you shouldn't make him have to guess!

Honey here's a word to the wise. You cannot make him be anything he isn't already. His formative years are long over and what you see is what you got and its gonna slide down a bit after the honeymoon. IF you want to make changes, you need to change to a new man because you are not going to make this one more romantic or more anything. If romance is impotant to you find someone else because the romance thing is like musical talent, you got it or you don't and if he don't he isn't likely to change.

Most "experts" have said to be engaged for atleast a year. But on average, most people only stay engaged for 6 months or less, so I guess it's really up to the couple.

However long you want the engagement to be. The location of your ceremony/reception could also dictate when to have the wedding.

If its a popular wedding spot you'd want to start reserving it at least a year in advance.

If he isnt romantic now....he wont be later. YOur engagement should last as long as it takes for you both to be ready to actually get married.
