In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

1. If the Bible is the truth and the way Christians interpret it is the truth then most the world is pretty much damned to "hell" apparently...also apparently some kind of monster thing is mentioned somewhere but that is all from interpretation. No dinosaur is clearly mentioned. 2. I guess people back then in Europe wouldn't have known what a Middle Eastern really looked like but today there is no excuse for him to be portrayed as a northern European type! Although in certain parts of the Middle East you do get people with pale colour skin and blue eyes etc not all are dark. 3. Apparently because of free will.....but I'm pretty sure people don't choose to be murdered, or starve or suffer a life threatening illness! Also people say it is because of sin but I thought our punishment was supposed to be "hell"... 4. Some peoples prayers they believe come true but why does God answer peoples prayers for things that aren't really important or that they don't really need but ignore those who are praying for safety, or a cure from an illness! It never made sense to me! I think Christianity can mess with peoples minds much because it uses horrible, scare tactics! I wasn't raised religiously at all, and I became Christian for a few months not long ago but I really didn't last long because when I learned the real beliefs of Christianity and all their scare tactics it really put me off that religion! I just can't make myself believe we all deserve to "burn in hell for eternity" for not being perfect when we were created imperfect! The Bible also is based entirely on interpretation, all of it could be metaphorical of all they know! It's like Christians pick and choose what is literal and what is metaphorical. Also many Christians refuse to learn that much of Christianity has been changed over the years and some beliefs were adopted from paganism.

That's a good question. I've often wondered about that scripture. It seems really interesting. I'm wondering, though, if "leviathon" IS satan, i mean, in Eden he showed up as a serpent, i think that's what they're referring to there. As for the dragon, only God knows, although it could have been another name for some kind of sea creature.

I think the reason christians aren't as inclined to profess belief in sea dragons is because it is rarely mentioned in the Bible, and it doesn't affect their salvation, or their relationship with Christ.

Thank you for bringing up this topic, it's always fun to talk about obscure stuff in the Bible.

Leviathan is known to be a dinosaur.

You're question is funny though....And yes I believe that Leviathan did exist! However with the flood, they were wiped out.

Also there is some spiritual meaning to that scripture- about the dragon in the sea, look at the dragon who comes out of the sea in Revelation.

why do you lump Christians into one group of people.... I personally believe that Dragon is probably the correct 'ideal' of what a Leviathan is.... just cuz i havent 'seen' something, doesnt mean it isnt there or isnt real... I believe that dragon is probably the best guess as to this creature... and I am a born again Christian...

The sea dragon here is used as symbolism. It represents Satan. Satan does exist, so therefore, symbolically, the sea dragon also exists.

Who says we don't believe in them? We simply don't know exactly what the author was talking about. Could have been a dinosaur, a salt-water crocodile, a shark or a killer whale.

Actually, there are many sea creatures that can overcome primitive man. That's really the point of such scriptures.

The sea dragon represented the Devil, not a real dragon.
