Yes and no. Chuckie's link to that chart is excellent.

Most Nikon film lenses will work just fine on most Nikon digital cameras. Each camera manual has a chart on lens comatibility in the back that might be a little easier to read than Chuckie's link. You may not have fully functioning features and the chartin your owner's manual will explain what works and what doesn't.

The biggest thing to know in 2007 is that the D40 will only work properly with the latest AF-S and AF-I lenses. They will not autofocus with older lenses, because the camera does not have an internal motor to focus the lenses.

If you are considering a specific camera and want more specific information, come back and ask a more specific question. For now, I'd say that most of your existing Nikon film lenses will do just fine on most Nikon DSLR's, except the D40.

It will definitely work on a D-SLR camera.
The question is not clear about which brand are you using.

For the Nikon DSLR, if you are trying to install these AI-s (non-AF) lens to these bodies, you will have to focus by your self.

Sometime, the "f" icon will be blinking on the little screen of your camera, which means: no aperture is found! It is because the lens you are trying to use is the MF and was produced long time ago, which didnot have a CPU inside. However, you can still stick with it. As long as you switch to "M" (manual) mode, everything's fine. You have to select the aperture from the aperture ring on your lens, and select the speed on your camera body, then give it a go!

In additional, with the AF (autofocus) lens that you used for your Nikon SLR body, it can be used normally on DSLR. Be sure to switch to the highest aperture (i.e. the biggest number: such as 22,32, etc.) before installing these lens to the body. Otherwise, you will get the blinking "f-er" icon on your body.

Good luck :)

D2xs / D200 - will work with all AF, AF-D, AF-s, AI, and AI-S lenses. Non AI lenses will mount but not meter.

D80/70/70s/50 will work with all AF lenses (-s, -d, -g) but will not meter with AI, AI-S, non-AI lens as the aperture index ring is missing from the body.

D40 will ONLY AF with AF-S lenses, but will accept other AF lenses just won't af with them. Nikon is not ready to support this camera! The only AF-s lenses available are $700 and up!
