I recently took a "break" from a 4 year university! Moved back home with my parents, have struggled to find a job, or even do much more than to lay around all day! My mom wants me to finish school because they paid for it, I joined the air force without telling them and just got their blessing today! My mom is afraid she will regret her decision i will admit. The Bush Administration has not been very diplomatics! But I'm only 20 and looking for suggestions, not idiotic ones i can think of enough of those on my own! The only reason I'm having second thoughts on the air force is because I don't want my mom to be hurt if anything happens to me! I've tried looking for a job many days in a row and have not found one, this is the first time I have ever had this issue. I tried going back to school but its not where I want to be right now but i do eventually, I just don't have the motivation for school right now, cuz i don't know what i want to do so I feel like i'm wasting time and money!

My friend, I enlisted in the Air Force one week after Saddam invaded Kuwait and it was the BEST decision I ever made. Trust me on this one -- you won't regret your decision. There is a small chance that you could end up going to Iraq or Afghanistan, but your chances for being sent to the sandbox are much higher in the other three branches of the service (yes, there are more Navy personnel than Air Force personnel in Iraq right now). See, in the Air Force they are very reluctant to send new troops to the AOR because they want fully-trained individuals who will be able to do the job with little or no supervision over there, and it will take you at least two years to get to that point -- by then we may have pulled all the troops out. I won't say you will not get sent over, but I will say the chances are very slim (unless you get into Security Forces -- DON'T DO THAT). Considering where you are in your life, a stint in the Air Force could be just the kick in the pants you need to move to the next phase in your life. The best thing is you can go back to school while you're on active duty if you like, and the Air Force will pay 80% of your tuition for every class where you get a C grade or better. BOTTOM LINE: You'll be better for doing at least one enlistment in the Air Force, and who knows? You may like it so well that you decide to stay in or join the active Reserve or the Air National Guard when you're done. You never know...

Your decision is right on. Don't doubt yourself or your decision. College isn't right for everyone all the time or at the time you are there, like in your case. The Air Force is a very good and safe choice. The people in the Air Force have a very high quality of life that is not true with the other services. The only downfall is that the people in the Air Force like their lives so much they never get out and thus your advancement isn't the quickest. You are smart and will do very well. You have the ability to reason things out with your own life so you should be able to do the same while in the Air Force. The military is a great way of life. What other job pays you for your clothes, for your food, for your rent and everything else you need? Your medical care is top notch and also very free. Go for it. You will not regret your choice. You will have a life that none of your friends could ever experience. You will do things that you would never imagine doing and you will see places you would never see if you stayed home or just got your college degree. College is awesome and you do need to finish while you are on active duty, but go with the AF and be proud of your decision. Mom will be ok and nothing will happen to you. Good Luck.

You have to understand first what joining the military means. What it is and what it is not.

Joining the military because you can't find any other job or need money to pay for college are common. When you enlist you are essentially signing over your rights and freedom to do as you choose.

They decide how good your healthcare coverage will be (military hospitals have some of the highest mortality rates in the country.) They decide where you go and for how long. Forget dating, family, friends, or a social life. You could be sent away for 9 months to Iraq. Young people signing up in hopes of an education find that rarely happens.

You join because you believe in it and because you aren't afraid to lose your life and/or limbs to protect your country. Join knowing that war changes you and you will not come back the same even if you come back alive. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is very common and can cause lifelong problems.

There is no guarantee that you will not see combat even if you join during a time of peace. Reconsider your reasons and decide if flipping burgers is better than being deployed to the *desert for nearly a year* where you would face the threat of car bombs and such.

Have I mentioned the pay is much less than what a police officer earns for risking their life on a daily basis?

I'm in the air force and it did a lot for me. It gave me the discipline and organisation i needed in my life. Its a great decision. And you have a significantly lower chance of getting hurt than the Army or the Marine Corps. It really depends on your AFSC (job) on whether or not you'll truly in be in harms way. You probably will get deployed but unless your security forces or in a job involving convoys, you should be good to go.

51 total airmen have lost their lives since the war started, the lowest of all the services, excluding the coast guard.

You'll be glad you signed up, its gonna change your life. After Basic and Tech school its like any other job.

Americorps or Peace Corps has a lot of great programs that are very motivating and you can help others.

Also you could think about other international programs where you do some sort of community service work for a year or two years. Such as teaching English in a foreign country or volunteering with the Red Cross.

It nice to be confused, huh?

You took a 'break' from college by 'joining the Air Force'?

I guess now you already have a job.

President Bush is now your boss!

Thank you for serving your country. Dig in. Do your best job!

You should know you can continue your education either while serving or after you complete your tour.

First of all realize that it is very common to not know what you want to do/be when you grow up. Read the Purpose Driven Life...good book, get some Tony Robbins cds, and spend some serious time thinking about it. Don't get forced into going to the military, but it you want to then go for it.

the air force is great and if you are smart they will put you in a job that will only enhance that you'll travel and it will push you to be a better person free everything and a little bit of perspective plus you'll help people around the world you can't change anything from the outside anyway it really will change your life and if you want to go back to school there is the GI bill to help them pay for it latter if the air force doesn't cover it already good job and good luck- side note i loved the army
