Lets say you are sitting alone at a coffee shop or at diner somewhere and a random member of the opposite sex sits at your table. Assuming this guy appears to be a normal person (not a serial killer), is that weird? Nice surprise? What would your reaction be?

I would strike up a conversation with the person.

First of all...I'd like to have a smile or some kind of connection with him before he sits at my table. He shd catch my eye. I think I'd be taken aback, but a lil flattered, ofcourse, assuming that he is a normal guy about my age. If it's an older guy, it'd scare me, unless he is a genial soul. But then, u never know, so I'll remain skeptical, and would wait n see what he says. If he seems creepy or seems like someone looking to take advantage, I'd get out of there as soon as possible. I'd also ofcourse like to know if he is married. No way do i want to be hanging out alone with a married guy who's out looking for fun or trying to catch girls. But yes, if I get all the right signals, and he seems real decent and uncomfortable himself...but bold enough to want to join me, that would seen in a positive light. A lot of guys just dont hv the guts, so when this happens, it'll be a good thing.

PS: Oh and I forgot to add: he shouldn't just sit, he shd first ask for permission..if it is ok if he joins me. That's how a gentleman is.

If there weren't any free tables, I'd say 'hi' briefly and then continue eating or drinking. If there were plenty of empty seats, I'd probably sort of look around at all those empty tables in a significant manner, not sure if I'd say anything but I might.
I'm not very sociable, I certainly wouldn't think it was a nice surprise.

I don't think it would bad, kinda suprising, but not real bad. But if he takes advantage of you like assuming that you'll pay for his food or coffee, that's where I'd draw the line. I'd say just be kind and let him or her continue to sit next to you, unless of course, it makes you uncomfortable.

In Europe, its apparently very common to have complete strangers eat at the same table as you in a restaurant. As long as they don't start talking politics, I think you're safe.

I would wait till he said something and if he didn't I would politely ask if he needed something or if he just wanted to sit there. If he just wanted to sit there then I would introduce myself and have a nice conversation with him! If i noticed something was weird about it i would excuse myself and leave.

i guess that depends on if you are single or not..if i was single, it would be a little weird but still nice and i would talk to him and enjoy the moment obviously he sat there for a reason.i would find out why....but i am married so i would find it very weird and uncomfortable so i would probably move.

Back in the day, I would have taken it as a come-on. Now that I'm old and no one but my husband finds me even remotely attractive, I'd be puzzled.

I'd say a nice surprise, unless he (she, in my case) starts acting or talking funny.
