Has anyone ever not been sure whether something actually happened in childhood or weather it was a dream? I'm afraid to mention what it is because it's not good...I don't think it's real but for some reason it was a reccuring dream (about something that could have happened) when i was growing up and I cant decide whether it was real or not. anyone else experienced this or have any comments?

Normally you will eventually forget a dream or at least only have a vague memory of it, especially as these dreams were many years ago. It sounds like they are actual events and the severity of the situation "at the time" has been blocked by your subconscious, which is obviously acting as a comfort barrier to the reality. Think its probing you to deal with these dreams once and for all. I had a similar experience, for months I was wondering and replaying it over and over in my head! It was really awful, mine turned out to be true reality. Good luck.

yeah I've had this with a few memories, not been sure if they were dreams or actually happened. I've asked my family about them and it looks like some were dreams but some happened

Maybe if it has been a reccuring dream, this would explain why you feel it has happened, because it feels so familiar

yes I have had this happen quite frequently..or I will have a dream and wake up form it and remember it so vividly and I could swear that it has happened at some point in my life. Or I will have something happen to me and I just dreamt about it the week before and when I dreamt about it I felt like it had already happened sometimes it make me think I live in alternate dimensions where I travel back and forth thru tiime or something... but back to your situation..sometimes the mind will supress bad/tramatic situations so you cant rememebr them its the brains defense mechanism to spare you the anguish but it is the subconscience that comes out when we sleep andthe brain cant control it...kind of like when you are hypnotized this is how they do it..but sometimes it will allow bad memories to be remmeberd and when you wake up your brain takes control again that is why you can't tell if it really happened or if it is a dream..

Sometimes my memories are just as faint and broken as my dreams, so I do know what you mean. I did have recurring dreams as a child, but not any more, and mine were certainly just that. But sometimes things happen as a child that we do not understand at the time, or that upset us and can have an effect later on. Is there someone you can talk to like a sister or best friend, or someone else who knew you as a child? It sounds like you need to talk to clear this up one way or the other.

That has happened to me, also...although usually my dreams are so outrageous that it's easy to tell what is real from what is fake. I suggest you bring it up as a dream, and see what kind of reactions you get. ;o)
