I usually smile at them, or nod my head. I don't say thank you or anything because I doubt they can hear me. Either way, it's nice for you to acknowledge that they've done something for you..Makes them more likely to stop for pedestrians in the future.

I smile and wave, or just smile, or just wave, depends on the person. Sometimes you can tell when they are annoyed, so I just wave, but if they seemed friendly about waving you to go ahead then I smile and wave. Heck in the summer, if the window is down, I say thank you and a smile. Its being polite, and whether they look at me as being weird or not, I still feel good for just being polite.

Think it depends on your personality. Waving might be a bit much for me. I always smile and nod. And suppose if I were the driver, and I got a wave, I would never think he/she is a weirdo. I think I'd like such a friendly, gracious person.

I think it's polite to acknowledge what they've done, at least wave and/or nod your head. I hate to stop and allow people to cross, or allow someone to turn or pull out in front of me and not even get a hand wave. It's like no one appreciates good manners any more.

Normally people don't thank these driver, so they find it strange if any one says Thank You.
In my opinion before you bail out of the taxi, tell him "you drive well, thanks for the comfortable journey ad than wave him, he won't look at you like a weirdo, but will smile and wave at you."
Reason; YOU KILLED TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE.

I make eye contact for a moment and nod with a slight smile . I then look in the direction I am headed... I try to move at a fast walk as to not further inconvenience the polite driver.

I do a closed-mouth smile (no teeth) and a small wave (hand up in the air, but not waving back and forth). You don't want to make it look like you've mistaken them for someone you recognize. Even if you are very enthusiastic in your thanks, it's alright! You're just being grateful for their considerate act of safety!

Normally I just smile & nod. Maybe I raise my hand a little but not enough to really 'wave'.

It's so important to do the right thing, no matter how people look at you! I give mean looks to people who don't smile and wave, so there you have it!
