You can eat the pods, they're indigestible and good roughage, but won't hurt you and are eatable. Like peanut or shrimp shells!

Those pods are hard to chew! They won't hurt you if you do manage to swallow one, but it is customary not to eat them. Instead, bring the pod to your lips, and then pop the beans straight into your mouth. Nice restaurants will provide a dish for you to throw the empty pods into; at other places, just put the pods on your side plate.
