It will vary a little depending on who you talk to. Some people get them fixed as Earlie as 8 weeks of age I personally wait until they are 6 months before take them in to get fixed. I would recommend asking your vet what they think and why. This will give you a better idea of what is right for you!!!!! Great job on making a responsible decision!!

Puppies and kittens can be spayed or neutered as early as 8 weeks (by vets who are knowledgeable about pediatric surgery).
The "ideal" age is between 16-24 weeks (4-6 months) old, which is after they have completed their vaccine series but before sexual maturity.
Some dogs don't read the book, so to speak, and can become sexually mature as early as 20 weeks (5 months old), so the sooner the better.
Congratulations on being a responsible pet owner! Wish there were more out there.

Since you're getting a female in the future DEFINITELY spay her BEFORE her first heat (before 6 months). This will almost totally eliminate her chance for developing mammary cancer. The risk greatly increases with each heat cycle, and after 4-5 heats (2-3 yrs) there is no protection form developing cancer.
It will also prevent the risk of developing a pyometra (infected uterus) 100%.
There is no benefit to waiting until after the 1 st heat to spay, in fact the opposite is true.

My puppy was alreay neutered when I got him at 3 months. I have heard and researched that the ideal age for a dog to be neutered is 6 months. It is not recommended to neuter a dog after a year or so. Most people neuter dogs for to restrict breeding, have a calmer dog and prevent cancer. When a dog is neutered earlier than 6 months they are more likely to have these conditions prevented.

He can get fixed now. The younger they are, the better they heal and the faster they heal. Also, if you get it done now, it should keep him from roaming for females in heat and keep him from marking before it becomes a habit. The youngest age to get them fixed varies upon the vet. Stacy G is right about the ages that a vet. will fix a pet. But for a male, generally, once both of his testicles drop, he is ready. If they don't drop by 6 months, then they may want to go up and get the ones that don't fall.
But in your situation, he is old enough.

You have to contact your vet to see how early they will do surgery on a dog. Some vets will do it as early as 8 weeks some make you wait till they are 6 months it just depends. I work at the local shelter in my area and would like to thank you for being a responsible pet owner by spaying/nuetering your pet. There are to many unwanted pets around. Good luck and thanks again.
