Muslims get their religious laws from the Quran. So ISLAM teaches that intoxicants are wrong, but Muslims don't always abide by them. The sincere ones do, but some non-devoted ones don't.

Here is the Quranic Passage that Forbids Intoxicants (Alcohol, Tobacco, drugs, any toxins forbidden by God.)

[2:219] They ask you about intoxicants and gambling: say, "In them there is a gross sin, and some benefits for the people. But their sinfulness far outweighs their benefit." They also ask you what to give to charity: say, "The excess." GOD thus clarifies the revelations for you, that you may reflect,

5:90] O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed.

[5:91] The devil wants to provoke animosity and hatred among you through intoxicants and gambling, and to distract you from remembering GOD, and from observing the Contact Prayers (Salat). Will you then refrain?

There is no compromise whatsoever regarding illicit drugs and alcoholic beverages.

In 2:219 and 5:90 or the Koran we see that "intoxicants, gambling, the idols' altars, and games of chance" are strictly prohibited. Thus, anything that hinders the mind is prohibited. This includes anything that alters the mind, such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, alcohol, hashish, and anything else that affects the mind.

"O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed." 5:90

But what does the Koran actually say about alcohol?

The Book makes a perfectly reasonable point. "Believers, do not approach your prayers when you are drunk but wait until you can grasp the meaning of your words."

"Believers, wine and games of chance, idols and divining arrows are abominations devised by Satan. Avoid them that you may prosper. Satan seeks to stir up enmity and hatred among you by means of wine and gambling and to keep you from the Remembrance of Allah and from your prayers."

When I became Muslim I even had to stop buying my old mother her weekly bottle of wine. Someone else had to take up the duty because it is considered haram (sinful) to supply intoxicants to others. It seemed foolish to me but still I stopped. To be honest, I felt uncomfortable in a liquor store wearing full hijab.

Tobacco is allowed.

These strictures apply to ALL Muslims no matter what the sect they are part of. They all read the same Koran.

Illegal or mind altering drugs, and alcohol are strictly forbidden. Taking up smoking is a sin, but if a person already smokes and quitting smoking would be unbearably difficult or would cause more harm than continuing, continuing isn't a sin. I can't imagine that stopping smoking could cause more harm than continuing, but I am not the one who will judge.

Its Shiites...not Shiyas...and they essentially believe the same thing. Where they differ is in their belief as to who is the rightful ruler of the Islamic Nation after the death of Mu-hammed...the ancestors of Mu-hammed or the local Imams who had tribal authority before Mu-hammed's rise and eventual consolidation of power within the Arab nations.

Their views are the same.

They both condemn drug, alchol and tobbacco usage. However in more liberal Muslim countires such as Egypt, most of the above are available.

one should understand that we have differences with the Shi`a but they are considered Muslims. Even though the Shiite school has differences in some secondary issues of `aqeedah(faith). and many issues in fiqh(sharia laws), they still believe that Allah is One and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and in other essentials of Islam.

so i think both agree on what islam says about those issues u mentioned .

In islam we believe that you can smoke but you cannot drink alcohol or take drugs. They are completely intolerant. Aren't Christians not allowed to take drugs?

hello dear
you can't use it
you know why?
because Islam is a religion which cares about the people and their health
In Islam hurting yourself is a sin
don't think as it as Islam said it so we HAVE to listen and if i wasn't a Muslim I would drink alcohol or ...
think about it in this way:
I don't wanna hurt myself and that's what Islam wants too

(no matter if your a sunni or a muslim ....if we are MUSLIMS, our religion is ISLAM then we want to listen to what our religion says because that's what we believe(remember what I said at the top?) the same between sunnies and shiaas

Good luck
