You are liable to pay duty on ALL items you import from outside the European Union, if its value exceeds £18. Buying from the U.S. or from eBay is irrelevant.

As a general rule, you can expect to pay an extra 30% on top of the total value of the item. This will cover import duty, V.A.T. and brokerage fees. These costs are totally your responsibility and have nothing to do with the seller.

Duty and vat is payable on goods bought from the USA, I think its about 8% duty but this may differ depending on what the item is. Then you have to add 17.5% onto that. You may also be charged a handling fee from Parcelforce or whoever handles the package this side of the pond.

Putting "gift" onto the parcel description is actually illegal and is classed as tax avoidance.

will all depend on your shipper and how they mark the package 0 if its from a private citizen marking it "gift' should get it through no probem - if its a larger 'store' on ebay then they might ship as a store and you will be forced to pay duty and taxes accordingly

and your question is ?

if they are trying to make you pay duty and it wasn't stated in the actual auction refuse to pay it as they are breaking the agreement and you have every right to cancel or not pay .. If it was stated then it has to be payed .. I've bought a few things from the States and *touch wood* they have never charged me tax nor have i ever payed it when i received my parcel !! !

Have them put "gift" on the form. It always gets me across the borders.
