Asbestos was used in making tile floors and in the insulation of the buildings long ago. It is dangerous if you breathe in the airborne particles, however, your school would not be using the building until the area was secured and the safety of the children and employees was controlled. I worked for a school district maintenance division, we had the asbestos removed from the buildings, I was there at one of the schools when it was being cleaned, we were required to wear masks, gloves and to stay away from the area being cleaned.

Its a mineral often used as a fire retardant / fireproof material. However, in some forms, asbestos particles can get inhaled and cause very serious lung conditions. While there are safe forms of asbestos, it is nowadays mostly removed from all installations.
