As a 50% VA rated disabled veteran, I have applied to at least 10 different jobs posted for the local MEPS station here in Cleveland. On every occassion people who don't get the veterans preference are given the jobs. I had 6 years experience recruiting while I was on Active Duty, so I am more than qualified for the jobs that are being posted. My resume contains all of the "buzzwords" listed on the skills/qualifications page yet I don't even receive a call. I have less than 10 months until I receive my BS degree in Management, I have received straight A's so far, yet NO calls. Upon further review I have found out a couple of positions that were filled by people that weren't even posted on the OPM website. I have absolutely had it with the way I have been treated for the last year and I want someone to be accountable for their actions.

What grounds is your discrimintion suit going to be on? Did you call and find out why you weren't hired?

The is a common misconception about "veterans preference." Veterans preference means that a qualifying veteran(service disabled, war veterans) are given additional points on the Civil Service exam. There is no "Veterans first" program when it comes to hiring government workers.
So lets say you score an 83 on a Civil Service test. You will get an extra 6 points for Vets preference. Which means you have an 89. Now if some non-veteran takes the exam and scores a 90. Well they get the job based on score alone and not vets status.
Most government jobs are hired out of nepotism, i.e. someone knows someone else and helps get them hired even before the job is posted.

Look, this is the "real" world. Most Civil Service and other government jobs
are filled by the merit system and the "real life system" [brother-in-law deal].
The jobs have a "spec" which is tightly written around the person who they already know and is perfect for the job. The "system" allows the idiot whom
would win on the god-playing gov. merit system to lose and not waste 6mos
or more trying to get rid of them and then go thru the same thing 8 more times before they can get the right guy in the first place. If you want a job --
meet someone -- at least talk with them on the phone. Most people just "get in the system" garbage/anything and then apply from there. Talk with some
people who are "in" and take some of their advice!!!! Oh, You AREN'T
SPECIAL except to yourself. There's millions of us. Think humble and try
to be creative and resourceful!!! [just like corp. job]. God Bless, [old vet]

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER......Give Up!" [Sir Winston Churchill WWII]

Forget the discrimination claim... that just makes you look as bad as every minority in this country that get jobs for free that they're not qualified for... the first place I would go is my congressman or State Representative. Keep in mind that when I applied to the feds, I had to be within 6 months of graduation before they would consider me.

What kind of discrimination would it be based on? age? race? religion? In the event of trying to sue or hold the government accountable, you can't. You can sue an individual employed by any department of the government if they have used their position or their authority to discriminate against you. You would also need evidence.

In the case of being overqualified, they may not want to pay you what you are worth for that particular position.
