Firstly, I presume that your father is not alive, or absent, because, otherwise, he would give you the information himself. Secondly, your mother must not be able to help you, or, you would have asked her. If this is correct, then it would seem you're on your own.

To begin with, if your mother and father were married, then your grandfather's name and occupation will be on their marriage certificate, so you could get his name from there. If you know your grandmother's Christian name you could have a look on FreeBMD for a marriage, you could give your grandfather's full name and your grandmother's Christian name, give an approximate year of marriage (you can choose any number of years) and see what you come up with. This site is free.

Another possibility would be your grandfather's death certificate (in Scotland the certificate would give you your grandmother's maiden name), however, in England you would get no such information. The thing is, on a death certificate you would get your grandfather's age. If you also knew his birthday, then you could work out his year of birth. If you did that, then you could send for his birth certificate and you could get details of his parents from there. You would still have to find the correct reference for the certificate, you could obtain this from FreeBMD or findmypast.

Unfortunately, to look at any census forms, you must get back to prior 1901, once you get there it becomes much easier. However, I imagine you must already have access to census forms in order to complete the other branches of your family tree, therefore, you must already belong to some family tree site.

I have found ancestry.com a very good site and scotlandspeople for searches across the border.

That's all I can think of for now, good luck with your search.

You may just have to mark him "Unknown" and leave it at that.

Your birth certificate, your parents' marriage license, a note about their wedding in a copy of the local newspaper on microfilm at the library, his obituary, his Social Security application or his death certificate might all help. Since you didn't say what country you are in or why you have no information it is hard to give a good answer.

People ask questions like yours frequently. Sometimes their father is a man their mother met for a night and never saw again (One had a father whose name was "Bruce" and sang in bars in Colorado. I advised her to put "Unknown" and work on her mother's side.) Someimes the father is dead, and sometimes the divorce was so bitter the mother refuses to speak of the father. Sometimes we can help, sometimes we can't.

Tracing your family tree is called genealogy. YA has a category for genealogy,
Home > Arts & Humanities > Genealogy
There are hundreds of more links in the resolved answers there.

Even though you go in through YA Canada, YA Australia, YA UK or YA USA, all of the questions go into one big "pot" and get read by everyone in the world who speaks English. Most of the people here are in the UK and USA, but you sometimes get questions and answers from people who worry about kangaroos eating their roses. So - put a nation, or, better yet, if you are asking about a specific individual, a nation and a state / province in all of your questions. It will help people help you.

Try going to ancestry.com, rootsweb.com,genealogy.com and posting a message, there may be people out there working on trees that have a connection you are unaware of, it is hard sometimes but well worth it, it took me over a year to find info on a gggrandfather but I was finally successfull. Best of luck. I have been doing genealogy for about 7 years now and love it. It takes time but the rewards are wonderful

Depends on a few things, were your parents married? is your father on your birth certificate? If your parents were married then on their wedding certificate it might have your father's father's name (your Grandfather), or at very least your father's full name and date of birth. It also depends on how old you are because if it's too recent then you might not be able to get into the records (census has a 100 year delay on it).
I have found church records (christening, marrage, death) the easiest way to trace my family tree. Good luck

This is a tough one. Without any information at all you won't be able to build a tree. Is there really no one who could give you a name at least and age. That way you can start looking on the internet. Ancestry.com is a good site. Genesreunited another good one.
