I need my taxes done for a mortgage closing in one week. Is there a big difference in return this way?
Prior question:
How do I complete our taxes if my husband does not have a social yet?
He has gone to the ss office and applied for it but it takes 30-45 days and I need to get my taxes done asap. I have a letter stating that he has applied.

If your husband doesn't have a SS# yet, you can't file taxes with him.

You could do your own taxes Married Filing Separate - but you would only be able to include YOUR income; not his.

You could amend the return to Married Filing Joint at a later date when he gets a SS#.

If you need a tax return only for the bank - ask them directly if they will accept a return that has not yet been filed. In other words, fill out the tax return Married Filing Joint, and offer a copy to the bank so they can see your joint income. But don't send the tax return to the IRS until his SS# is on the form.

You can't file separate OR joint without his SSN.

If your closing is in an week and you need the refund to close, you'll have to delay the closing. Even if you filed today, there's no guarantee that your refund would arrive in time. You can't file without his SSN.

Even if you could file a separate return without his SSN, your tax bill would be considerably higher and you won't be getting anywhere near as much back as you would filing a joint return.

If the letter has a number on it. You can use that number. You don't have to have the card per se. This is not going to be fast no matter what...you would do well to seek the help of a face to face tax professional.

good luck & blessing
