What do you think is the best way to go? Should I go to H&R Block etc. or should I pay about $40 per year ('03-'05) for tax software?

Also, my wife (whom I will be filing for) was claimed as a dependent in all of those years and she held a part-time job. Should that affect my decision?

Your best bet is to go to the IRS website and get the paper forms. It's alot cheaper than having to look for backdated software and you'd have to paper file any way. Go to IRS.gov and search for 2003 forms, 2004 forms and 2005 forms to get the PDF versions of the tax forms.

Yes, you need to buy the software for each year.

You wife can't be claimed as a dependent by anyone if she was married to you at the end of those tax years. If she was not married and didn't file a return but was required to, she must file, period.

What do you mean you claimed your wife as a dependent? Not as your spouse? You would probably be better served to check with a professional. Sometimes you can negotiate with places like Jackson Hewitt for multiple years.

good luck & bless

you can't electronically file past tax returns. only this years return can be efiled. You can get the forms and instructions from the irs web site http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/article/0,,id=98339,00.html

If she was a dependent and her taxes are pretty easy I would do them on your own. You will have to mail them in because the IRS does not accept them electronically anymore.
