There is no real obsession with blood. It comes up in mass as a symbol of Christ. Beyond that, it's not really discussed. While I'm sure you could find references in the Bible, I'm also sure that you could find references where blood is used as a symbol in the Torah or Koran as well. Blood is also referenced in other smaller religions like Voodoo, and Santeria. I'm not well read on Hinduism, Taoism or Buddhism, so cannot comment if blood plays a role in those religions.

Blood is the stuff of life. Plus, life under Roman rule was bloody. Hey, at least it's not a sex fetish like the one Angelina Jolie has for blood.

Well it is all based on "pagan" and pre-existing religions... some of which were very much based in blood rituals and sacrifice. The blood worshipping cults got some of their stuff adopted and used in christianity.

And no, it's not really conductive of a healthy life to continue indirect worship of blood.

The idea of sacrifices is common in most religions. One of the more important Jewish holidays is Passover. According to the Gospels and Christian tradition, Jesus was crucified on Passover, thus the crucifixion of Christ represents literally and figuratively the final sacrifice, God himself, for Man’s deliverance.

According to the legend, God chose a certain “people” and made a covenant with them, which stipulated among other things that they offer Him regular blood sacrifices in expiation of their sins.

Eventually God decided to send His own Son to earth so that the people could offer Him as a "sacrifice to end all sacrifices," destroying the curse of sin. The catch is that people from that point on have to confess belief in the efficacy of that final blood sacrifice to God to enjoy His forgiveness and get into Heaven when they die. (People who were unfortunate enough to have been born before this ultimate sacrifice are more or less screwed, although various Christian cults have made various imaginary concessions, e.g. the doctrine of "Dispensations.")

All this is standard Christian theology in every point.

In other words, the God of the Christians is a sadistic, bloodthirsty monster, and all of human history is merely the attempt to slake that thirst, and so avoid His tyranny.
