I've had a mole on my forearm for my entire life (not sure if it was there when I was born, but probably not!) It's not really changed, but has some of the ABCDE characteristics. For example, sort-of assymetrical, irregular border (but an ovalish shape), color is pretty much the same but a bit lighter in the middle. Diameter is smaller than a pencil eraser, and it is elavated, but always has been and hasn't changed.
This picture looks quite a lot like my mole: http://www.skincancer.org/images/stories/dysplastic_nevi/d_nev_5.jpg
Should I get it checked out/removed, or am I fine right now? My family have always had atypical moles, but nobody in my family that I know of have developed skin cancer. I'm thirteen, can melanoma occur at this age?

Its unusual in such a young person but you need to get it looked at by a doctor to put your mind at rest. you are obviously worried about it! Talk to your mum, explain your worries and ask if she will take you to the doctor about it.

Sweetie, please don't stress about it, that picture looks like most of my moles too! (I'm 40 and have had moles my whole life).I'm willing to bet plenty of money you don't have melanoma, but people with moles are advised to have a Dr. check them once a year. They take pictures and the next year compare the pictures to see any changes. Just tell your mom your concerns.

I have never, ever seen a perfectly round mole. Not on me anyway. ;o) It's very good of you to be proactive though.

Have a fund weekend!

Some skin cancers are very slow growing and not very invasive. If it has not changed in the last month you should be fine. Have it checked as soon as you can by a doctor.

If you cant afford the doctor visit ask at your school nurse for advice. They will often know a doctor who will help at no charge.

It would be unlikely at age 13 to have melanoma, but you should know what this is. A dermatologist or your doctor can tell you for sure, so have your parent take you. It doesn't hurt to have it looked at and they will probably leave it alone if it is not a lesion to worry about.
