The only reason I can think of why your husband doesn't have a social security number by now is that he is a new resident. A person who doesn't have a ss# can apply for an ITIN - Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. This process will take as long and it is either one or the other.
You will have to wait for them to issue him a number. If they can give you the number without the card, you will prob. still have to file paper, because it will take weeks for the SS & IRS to match up.

You'll need to hold off until he gets his SSN. There is no way that you can file a return without the SSN. If you attempt to do so, the IRS will reject the return. If you file a paper return, not only will they reject the return, but they will assess a $50.00 penalty for filing a return without a SSN.

You can go ahead and prepare the return now, but you can't file it until you have his SSN and put it on the return.

you cant he either has to have a social security number or a taxpayer identification number. Both of those take a month or two to get. So if you need money quick file now without your husband and then amend the return when you do get the number.
