Swimming is the essence of life.

Renate is from reno, to swim back, but the form is incorrect. It is possible that they meant to say "renare" instead, as r and t are right next to each other on the keyboard. It is also possible that it is a person's name.

Edit: I had put renate into the Lewis & Short form analysis page, and it only came back with reno. It is also a participle from renascor, as well as reno, so it also means renewal is the essence of life, but the form is still incorrect. It should be renatus.

As your first answer.

However, Renate (capital R) can also be a name. So maybe this person thinks they are the essence of life?

I believe it means rebirth or regeneration is essential for life but that is a guess because the sentence structure isn't quite right. Where does the quote come from? "Renate" may come from "renatus" to be reborn.

i could translate it: Rebirth is the essence of existence. the thank you to respond? nicely, perhaps: Rigor est essentia mortis Stiffness (or strictness) is the essence of death (a play on the nicely-ordinary word "rigor mortis") Primum vivere, deinde philosophari stay first, then philosophize Iesus dixit, "Oportet vos nasci denuo." Jesus suggested, "you would be born back."
