my wisdom teeth surgery ended approx. four hours ago. why are my bottom lip and chin numb? my mouth is no longer numb at all... just those two parts. i wouldn't even think that Novocaine would be injected in those areas.

Thats quite normal. Novocaine will affect the surrounding area thank God, otherwise you would be in such pain. The lip and chin skin are more tender than the mouth

Well, that depends on what type of an anesthetic you got. Usually they last anywhere from 4-6 hours. If however, by tonight your bottom lip and chin are still numb, it may mean that your mandibular nerve underwent some bruising or stretching during the operation. This is called a Parasthesia, and it's common with some wisdom teeth. However, your oral surgeon SHOULD have informed you of this possibility PRIOR to taking out your wisdom teeth. Usually, when the nerve is stretched or bruised, it causes numbness, usually temporary, sometimes the feeling comes back that same week, but couple of RARE ocurrences it can be permanent. Wait a few hours, if by tonight you have no improvement, call your oral surgeon tomorrow morning for an immediate follow-up.

This can be in response to the amount or strength (%) of the novicaine injected into the lower cheeks and gums. Be very cautious when eating or drinking. I'm sure the dental surgeon suggested puddings or jello. If you still feel numb tomorrow morning I would call the surgeon or their nurse to discuss the issue. One time when I had dental work the right side of my face was numb for 2 days and the dentist informed me it was not anything to be concerned about as he may have inadvertantly injected a bit of novicaine into a small facial nerve. The nerve patterns in the face are not identical for each patient and the dentist cant visualize them prior to injections so it's a bit of a crap shoot. Ride it out for now.

Everyone's always trying to sue. I can almost guarantee you signed something stating that it was possible nerve damage could occur from the procedure. It's not the doctor's fault that the tooth had to come out and it was possibly too close to the nerve and the only POSSIBLE way to extract it was to come in contact with the nerve. That is when the doctor has to decide what is best for the patient: Having a tooth that can potentially cause problems, pain and infection later down the road, or risk damaging the nerve. Hmmm... I choose pulling the tooth. People. get over yourselves with the suing. You all complain about high doctor bills. It's because they have to pay so much to malpractice insurance for all of the suing people do.

I had a root canal recently at 11:30 in the morning and the numbness didn't wear off until about 10:30 that evening. It all depends on the dentist and how much novacaine he uses.

The novacaine the dentist injects will numb your entire jaw area and it's perfectly normal for it to last quite awhile after having teeth pulled. I don't remember how long it lasted when I had mine out (I was really sick afterward), but I had a couple cavities filled in the last year. I don't think they use as much novacaine, but I sat around poking my jaw and I like to believe that makes the feeling come back sooner...could just be me though.

Could be nothing, but if it was a lower wisdom tooth that was extracted you should get it checked as there is a nerve that runs along your lower jaw that can be effected when you have a tooth extracted. The numbness does go after a while, but with some people it never goes away.
See your dentist, or speak to them asap.
