I own a 91 4.0, auto, hardtop,AC. Bought in 96 w/92,000miles on it. Drove it for another 100,000 miles before it started to show its age. It was my wife's everyday driver and we've even driven it across country (Ca-RI) with a trailer attached. Its not meant to pull a heavy load!
Had the motor rebuilt in 2004. So far so good. It now has 202,000 miles.
Like any older auto, things/parts wear out. I just had my fuel pressure regulator replaced. No big deal it runs great again. Don't expect a econo car on gas cuz (like me on a week end) it likes to drink!
Get yourself an autofax! Cars can keep secrets better than a mob informant! Have a mechanic scope it out if you can. Get the seller to give you the compression rating the last thing you want is to buy a problem'd Jeep, then you'll have PINHEADS saying told you so.
My uncle has over 350,000 miles on his 93 and it has never given him a problem.
Jeep YJs are not bad cars its the owners. Stick with 91-94. That's when the 4.0 took over in place of the 4.2
As far a goodies for Jeep, one catalog stands out....Quadratec. Its the most complete catalog out there and its FREE! I use it for reference then I'll shop for a cheaper price. Sometimes I find a better deal sometimes I don't.
Will I get rid of my YJ....never. Its a cool ride. I get a lot of positive feed back from people and its not a trick as I wish it were. As far as the negative comments above.....just a bunch of haters!
check the links below:
Also check my 360 page, my YJ is there.
Feel free to ask me questions if you want. I luv talking shop.

I have a 99 jeep wrangler and at first, I loved it!!! After a few years though it has started to get old... the experience i mean. I have a soft top and have had it all along. The soft tops are a pain sometimes. The zippers for the windows stop working after awhile, and the weather seems to do a number on it too. Also, jeeps are very loud at high speeds. If you get on the interstate, don't count on talking to your friend or getting on the phone. Not sure if you get the same experience with hard tops. I have a soundbar and I would definitely recommend it. Otherwise you may not hear your music! At first you will like your Jeep, but you will get sick of it soon. Another thing you may want to look at is the 4-wheel drive gears and be sure the driveability is OK because that is one of the first things to go out in the older jeeps. Hope this helps!

I work at the Toledo Jeep Wrangler assembly plant so I'm a little bias.I have owned 3 Jeep Wranglers and never had any problems with them.I would stay in the 1992 and above,if you could swing it I would get the 1998 TJ and above. Also the hard tops are easy to remove,if you buy a Wrangler with a soft top make sure you buy the FULL METAL DOORS.You don't want the half doors because they make a lot of noise.I have always bought the soft tops, there is more noise but fun in the summer. Also get the I-6cyl engine and manual trans if you know how to drive a stick. Also aftermarket parts are everywhere, try 4WD.com or Quadratec.com.I hope you buy 1,they are very fun in the summer and if your into 4wheelin they go almost anywhere.

I have a 1995 Wrangler, and other than my garage bill today, my Jeep has been wonderful! I have close to 250,000 miles and it passes inspection every year w/little cost. I have had all GOOD experiences with my Jeep and would advise you to go for it. Jeeps do come in automatics, however I prefer a manual Jeep. As for the hardtop v. soft top question. If you buy a hard top Jeep you can buy a soft top. Changing the tops with the season is fairly easy, with no visit to a garage needed. My Jeep has a factory issued hard top, and I bought my soft (rag) top from Quadratec. I've had the soft top for several years now with no complaints. I did not buy the most expensive nor the cheapest. I found the sales representatives to be fairly helpful.
Hope all this helps! In my opinion you won't make a mistake by buying an older Jeep.
BTW - the 4.0L engines can't be beat!

The 90-94 Jeeps were as reliable as any, and did come with an automatic. The hard top was an option that just sits on top of the Jeep and is easily removed for summer operation. Some things to watch out for, cracked exhaust manifolds, carburetor problems, trashed drive lines from off road abuse. I would avoid any highly modified used Jeeps since they tend to be the ones that were driven hard.

I have a 91 Wrangler Hardtop with a automatic, and as for making it a soft top yep, Bestop makes the replacement soft top (the Supertop with hardware) or like I did took the hard top off, got a Bikini top, back duster (for when it gets cold, hold on the to hard doors as they are great in bad weather and everyone wants them. but I also got a set of 1/2 door (Diamond plate from Warrior).

Jeeps are great vehicles, both on and offroad. Buy a 4WD model. Yes they are available in manual or automatic transmissions.
You may purchase a soft top if the model you purchase has a hard-top, you can get one from your local jeep dealer ($$$$$) or you can get one from http://www.jcwhitney.com. Its not a dumb question, if you aren't familiar with the vehicle its understandable to have questions.
http://www.jcwhitney.com
http://www.arb.com (parts, lift kits, bumpers)
Good luck on your purchase and enjoy your Jeep.

A few improvements made in those model years:
1991: Fuel injection replaced carburetors. HUGE improvement
1992: Roll bars extended rearward for rear shoulder belts
1993: Anti-lock brakes available (optionally)
1995: Bodies galvanized (reduces rust), last model year of the YJ's (square-headlight Wranglers).

Don't do it. Have owned a Jeep for two years now. My key is permanently stuck in the ignition for some reason and I don't care, hoping someone will just steal it. Gas mileage is horrible, seats are uncomfortable, road noise is untenable, rides like a corncob.

Stay away from the 4.2 (carburettor) and go with the 4.0 injected six. don't get an automatic, they are only three speeds for these years and get horrible mileage besides, being a sacrilege to a open -air off road vehicle.
