My dad slipped on the ice outside of his house yesterday, fell down, and broke his 6 month old puppy's neck that had been following right behind him, killing the puppy..

My dad is completely depressed right now, extreme guilt which I can completely understand.

Should I get him a sympathy card or anything like that??

The thing I should tell you is that my father loves his animals probably more than he loves his family.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Accidents do happen. This was just a very unfortunate event. I can see that your father has a passion for animals. I don't think that much you can say will make him forget the whole thing and feel on top of the world. But I guess it would cheer him up if you gave him plenty of reassurance I think a card would be a great gesture.

I would definitely get him a card or something...especially since he feels guilty and horrible- he will need to come to terms with it.

My sister-in-law had a similar thing happen when she had her puppy out side without a leash while she was taking care of horses and one of the horses ended up stepping on and kililng the dog. Of course she thought 'if only i would have kept the dog on a leash'

What helped her get over it was 1.) getting a new dog when she felt the time was right and 2.) thinking of the happy memories and good things about the dog...'she was so happy that day and it was sunny and she was playing outside and loving it'- so a card or talking to him could be a good way to focus on the wonderful memories he shared with the puppy and not focus on the tragedy.

A sympathy card that is made to give after the loss of a pet is a fantastic thing. We got a couple when we lost our best friend of 16 years and it touched us more than anything anyone else could have done.

It may also be nice to offer to make a meal for him and to do all the clean up afterwards. A little time off can often do wonders for the heart. It's a hard loss.

How horrible! I'm so sorry!
Definitely get him a card- I actually found a sympathy card for loss of a pet at CVS once. Get him a soft snuggly teddy bear too (Not a stuffed dog!!). It'll probably sit on a shelf but the feel of the soft fur might soothe him a bit when he's down.

When I had to put down my beloved greyhound due to a brain tumor, my sister-in-law got in touch with the name a star registry and named a star after our deceased dog. It was absolutely the best condolence gift I could have recieved since I now know that there is a star up there somewhere named Jantz. I don't know exactly how she went about doing it but it sure would be worth the effort to Google if you ask me. I am so sorry for your and your dad's loss and I am sorry your dad has to carry that guilt, I know there is no sense in telling him that it was not his fault since in a case like this, he is gonna fell guilty no matter what. You have my thoughts and prayers.

Oh thats soooo sad. i feelso bad for your dad. it definately was just a cooincidence. I would offer ot replace the dog when hes ready. But dont just go to him one day with a puppy because he might not be ready. It really depends on how your dad is if u should get him a card. Only u would know if he thinks it would be corny or if it would make him feel better.

In this situation some people benefit from immediately getting another dog. I would think it would be too soon, but you should ask your father. Maybe a trial puppy from the humane society, take him there, let him interact with the dogs are let him know it was totally accidental.

Tree Givers. They will plant a tree in a state you pick in memory of your Dads dog. He'll get a certificate with the dogs name on it and you can add a few words. I did this for my sister when she lost her 20 yr old jack russel/boston terrior and she was very touched by it.

I would say... that you sit and talk with your dad and explained to him that it is not his fault...it was a accident... also getting a new pup may help the grief... bad things happen to good people all the time.... you can't help it or explain it even.

so sorry for yours and your dad's loss
